There's a one-shot story of Death Note that was recently released (There are plenty of places to read it in English - just google: Death note one shot).
It's a pretty smart & different take on the whole Death note concept, but oddly enough twump's portrayal isn't really out of line; in fact I'd say the way that things played out were pretty realistic.
