Topic of serial killers

A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people with a "cooling off" period between each murder and whose motivation for killing is largely based on psychological gratification.[1] One hypothesis is that all serial killers suffer from some form of Antisocial Personality Disorder.[2] They are usually not psychotic, and thus may appear to be quite normal and often even charming, a state of adaptation which Hervey Cleckley calls the "mask of sanity." There is sometimes a sexual element to the murders. The murders may have been completed/attempted in a similar fashion and the victims may have had something in common, for example occupation, race, or sex.

The term serial killer is said to have been coined by Michigan State University alumnus and FBI agent Robert Ressler in the 1970s.[3] Serial killer entered the popular vernacular in large part due to the widely publicized crimes of Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz in the middle years of that decade.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
As a society, we've always had a morbid fascination with this genre of criminals. Is it perhaps because they allow us to take a glimpse into the abyss that represents the most horrific and insidious aspects of human behavior? Perhaps we see something of ourselves in these diabolical murderous monsters that inevitably draws us to them like a moth to a flame. Maybe it is just the sheer terror and fear that they provoke in us that leads us to be obsessed with curiosity about them.

Then again, maybe some of us just want to make money from them:

hm. I just read an interesting article about Henry Lucas, the man attributed to hundreds of murders, who was pardoned from execution by George W. Bush, of all people.

The article is called Henry: fabrication of a serial Killer, after the movie Henry: Portrait...which was inspired by his case.

It not only attempts to cast doubt on Lucas' guilt, but it suggests that the purported common occurrence of serial killings is a calculated myth designed to generate support and publicity for police and crime-writers.

Not sure if I agree, but like I said, an interesting idea.

Henry Lee Lucas (August 23, 1936 – March 13, 2001) was an American criminal, convicted of murder and once listed as America's most prolific serial killer. However, he later recanted his confessions. He once flatly stated "I am not a serial killer" in a letter to researcher Brad Shellady.[1]

Lucas confessed to involvement in about 600 murders, reportedly removing all males' left testicle and females' right nipple, with an average of about one murder per week between his release from prison in mid-1975 to his arrest in mid-1983. A more widely circulated total of about 350 murders committed by Lucas is based on confessions deemed "believable" by a Texas-based "Lucas Task Force," a group which was criticized by Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox for sloppy police work and taking part in an extended "hoax".[2]

Beyond his recantation, some of Lucas's confessions have been challenged as inaccurate by a number of critics, including law enforcement and court officials. Lucas claimed to have been initially subjected to poor treatment and coercive interrogation tactics while in police custody, and that he confessed to murders in an effort to improve his living conditions. This calls into question many of his alleged murders, since his confessions were often the sole evidence cited in favor of his guilt, especially his sole death penalty conviction. Amnesty International reported "the belief of two former state Attorneys General that Lucas was in all likelihood innocent of the crime for which he was sentenced to death."[3]

Lucas's sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1998 by then-Governor George W. Bush. His was the only death penalty case among the 153 that came across Bush's desk in his tenure as Texas Governor in which he intervened and commuted the death sentence. Lucas died in prison of natural causes. Because Lucas's death removed the possibility of resolution in many instances, there are still a number of unresolved questions. Some authorities — while admitting that Lucas tended to exaggerate his accounts and told some outright lies, and also recognizing that the Lucas Task Force engaged in some very questionable tactics — insist that Lucas was a viable suspect in a number of unsolved murders. Despite these factors, Lucas still maintains a reputation, in the words of author Sarah L. Knox, "as one of the world's worst serial killers — even after the debunking of the majority of his confessions by the Attorney General of Texas."[4]

Lucas allegedly carried out many murders with an accomplice, Ottis Toole, whose reputation as a serial killer is mostly unaltered by Lucas's recantations
