Too Fat To Graduate? Lincoln University's BMI Requirement Causes Uproar

Lincoln University students now have one more hurdle to pass before they graduate: losing weight. According to a recently instituted requirement, university students with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 will have to take a physical education class in order to receive their diploma.

The program "Fitness for Life" began in 2006, but this is the first year the effects will be felt. This spring, the new requirement will keep over two dozen students -- all black -- from graduating.

The new rule has been criticized around the blogosphere, and has not been well received by the student body.

"What's the point of this? What does my BMI have to do with my academic overcome?" asked Dionard Henderson, a freshman. "Some students on campus are just confused why a certain BMI has to be a requirement. Are there not a sufficient amount of prerequisites to complete prior to graduating from college?

GOOD!

It's about time people started stepping up against this problem.

Haha, I would love this, but it shouldn't be allowed. After I graduate the jobs would go up 10 fold because of this.

School isn't about this. It's the government over-stepping their bounds once more.

I hope there's a huge lawsuit.

In other words, pretty much everybody who is graduating in 2010 either knew what they were getting into before they enrolled, or knew early enough in their program to transfer elsewhere without significant academic penalty. It's a private university and they gave everybody fair warning that it was coming. If they don't graduate on time, it's their own damn fault.

No, it's not their fault.

They are there to learn. Not get a fitness degree.
That's why it would be better to homeschool your own children.

Also, something else:
"The new requirement will keep over two dozen students -- all black -- from graduating."

Hmmm, agenda?

It is their fault. Being fat is a choice. Fat people will never admit to that though.

And who said anything about a fitness degree? Keeping yourself in enough shape to not be overweight is not that difficult.

Bullshit...

1) It's a private university. Every student there chose to enroll knowing that their degree would be based on more than academic performance.

2) I'll bet that most of the 12 are not only African-American, but women as well. It's sexist too! Or... African-Americans have the highest rate of obesity in the U.S., with African-American women the highest in the country (70% higher than white women).

For every arguement for, there is an arguement against. But obviously because you think your opinion is better than anyone elses, it would be impossible to change your mind.

Because you only reply to me to disagree with what I say.

Who cares.

I guess it is sexist as well. Sounds like they are being singled out.

It's a shame really.

What makes this even worse is that BMI indexes are often an very inaccurate reflection of a person’s physical health. A lot of athletes or people into bodybuilding would fail it while being much more healthy than an average person.

It's actually just complete coincidense that anything you say I happen to disagree with. Something I share in common with 99% of board members here.

There you go. :hatsoff:

99%, you're far off. And again, you only reply to me to disagree.
Actually not just me. others as well.
