today I am ashamed ....

..... to call myself an American. This afternoon at my college a gentleman decided to pray before going to class. He decided that the parking lot was as good a place as any to pray, I'm not sure he was impeding the flow of traffic, but the Campus Police were called.

A fellow student busted into class (in this case a vocational shop) and shouted "There's some fucking Muslim praying in the fucking parking lot" followed by racial epithets. Now, this wasn't what made me sick. what made me sick was that everyone else at the study table jumped up and immediately developed a mob mentality of "Oh let's get 'im, blah blah..."

Parking lot? He's lucky he didn't get ran over by some woman driver eating a ham sandwich while wearing a mini skirt. That would have sucked big time!

Every American should be ashamed that people like this live in their country.

I agree that this Islamophobia needs to stop but why pray in the parking lot? Couldn't even just go on a sidewalk or perhaps the grass if it was nearby?

No, every American should stop feigning outrage over the idea that stupid people represent them because they reside within the same 50 massive state.

If anybody is ever ashamed to be American because of the behavior of others, then they cannot ever be proud to be American because of others. Therefor, the stupid argument is moot.

What a dumb fucking thread.

I agree that it's shameful, but don't try to, once again, pretend that every other country doesn't have these people as well and that it's only in America.

Thanks for putting words in my mouth there, son. Whatever helps you understand. Did I ever say we didn't have people like this in Canada? Nope. Am I ashamed that there are people like this in my country? Yes. Do they represent the vast majority of people in my country? Of course not.

Why are you ashamed that people who don't know you, aren't related to you and cannot be influenced by you are ignorant and stupid? Are you ashamed of the rapist and child molesters? How can you empathize shame??? And why would that empathetical shame have anything to do with geography??

Am I ashamed that people like that live in my country? No. They are people I have no control over and I can't have control over. Do I think they are assholes? Yes. Do I think they are the majority of any country? No

I live my life and teach my children to not be assholes like that. I can try to explain to people why it's wrong to treat people like shit but that doesn't mean they will listen. However I won't stop saying it and maybe some will listen and change. That is all I can hope for.

Why wouldn't I be ashamed that there are people like the ones in the article living in my country; a country that is founded upon the idea of multiculturalism? More importantly, why do you even care? You don't care when shit happens to people you don't know. Good for you.

Nice try. I brought up empathy, not sympathy. I do care what happens to people I don't know. I care what happens to people in general. But my ego isn't massive enough to project the thoughts and actions of others upon me. I don't feel shame for the actions of others just as I don't feel their pain when they get sick or their orgasm when they fuck.

Being ashamed of the actions and beliefs of others is the surrender of individuality. Or worse, the projection that you're the righteous standard. If we were more concerned with our own affairs, this would be a much better world.

Actually, the veteran who is a genuine conservative and American patriot in the story should be commended for his courage and bravery to defend a lone individual from being attacked by a lynch mob of a bunch of chickenhawk NeoCons who are too chickenshit to enlist in the military

What does the "common man" of America have to be ashamed of?

That he works his ass off from 9-5 every day to make a measly paycheck to support his family?

The judgement he receives from the stupid morons who base their thoughts off of the world seen through the eyes of the media?

The man who struggles daily trying to make ends meet, and find a way just to be happy?

What makes Americans any different than any other human on this planet?

Ummm, what do commendation and shame have to do with each other? One is a projection, the other an acceptance. I'm not arguing over the supposed crowd's reaction, but the absorption of ignorance and intolerance by being a witness to it.

My ego is very big, yes. It's like a superpower; with it I can see the thoughts of everyone around me. I feel ashamed because there could be someone visiting my country seeing something like that and leaving with a poor idea of the people here. I don't really care whether or not you share someone's orgasm or not. If you feel different than me, that's great. I don't really see why you're trying to call me out on it. I'm fairly confident that I have not given up any of my individuality, and anyone who considerers a racist nationalist like myself the righteous standard is probably not the smartest person in the room.

Maybe they were shouting "Lets get him!....
........and move him from the parking lot where he might do whatever it is that Muslims do in a safer place, away from the threat of vehicles!"

I'm not calling you out on anything other than the idea of assuming the shame of others runs counter to demonstrating character by the example of character. You argument is basically that, "I'm ashed that some of my countrymen may generalize because other, foreign, people might generalize my countrymen because of that."

Hopefully, the rattlesnake finds its rattle quite tasty because the snake is eating its tail.
