Milestones
In 1921, British mountaineers Lt. Col. Charles Howard Bury led the first official expedition to find a route to the summit. The climbers reached Lhakpa La, a 22,500-foot pass. Guy Bullock and George Mallory, proceeded to the Northern Col (c.23,000 ft) on Sept. 23, 1921. From this point they were able to examine the summit and plot a route, now know as the Northern Route, to reach it.
A second expedition, led by Brig. Gen. Charles G. Bruce, made the first assault to reach the top the following year. In May 1922, Mallory, Teddy Norton, Henry Morshead, Howard Somervell and five porters set out from Camp IV in a bid to reach the summit. Without supplementary oxygen, the attempted was doomed to fail. The porters turned back at 25,000 feet. The British climbers turned back at 26,985 feet. but they had climbed almost 2,400 feet higher then anyone before them.
On the way down Mallory's team met George Finch and Geoffrey Bruce (nephew of the expedition leader) going up, Finch and Bruce carried supplement oxygen and climbed 27,300 feet before turning back.
