Goodbye, my loyal friend.

Sony’s PlayStation 2 – the best-selling gaming console of all-time – has seen its final days in its native Japan. After over 150 million pieces of hardware sold over a period ranging nearly 13 years, Sony has revealed that production of the console has ceased in Japan.

Develop Online cites a report from famous Japanese source Famitsu stating “that Sony has told the nation’s retailers that it will not deliver any more PS2s for sales in stores. Once current stock is sold no more will arrive.” It’s important to note, according to Develop Online, that “Sony has not confirmed whether it will stop production of the system for other territories,” though we’ve reached out to Sony for clarification on this point specifically.

Sony announced that PS2 hit the 150 million units sold landmark way back in February of 2011. At that point, 10,828 individual titles were released for the console, with more than 1.5 billion software units sold, a staggering figure cementing PS2’s historic success.

PlayStation 2 sits atop the best-selling consoles of all-time, with the original PlayStation coming in second place at 102 million units sold. Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Xbox and GameCube – in order – make up spots three to 11, according to this fully cited best-selling game consoles Wiki.

I still have both of mine.Honestly,it's a bit surprising that they were still making them up until recently.

You've missed out on some great games there, Squally.

I'm going to miss the good ole days when the PS2 churned out a variety of Capcom games

That's precisely the reason I bought one, having played Capcom vs SNK 2 coin-op in my student union. I still play it, along with WWE Here Comes The Pain, and all my PSX games. After leaving uni I never bothered with another system so the PS2 sits at the base of my TV as a monument to my 10 years or so as a proper gamer.

I always thought I'd be an Nintendo fan for life. Even through the Sega years, which at times were tough. Once I purchased a PSone over the 64, the game changed forever for me! Playstation will always be my current favorite console. PSone was a beast but PS2 was a game changer!

i just started using the ps2 ive owned for like 10 years. never got games for it until now.

im waiting on FFX and beyond good and evil.

Final Fantasy X is definitely worth the five dollars it goes for now. A decent investment to play, in my opinion, the last great Final Fantasy.

Yeah, I've still got mine. I break it out and play TimeSplitters (2 & 3 mainly) when I get nostalgic.
