As long as the human race continues to disagree on things like race, religion and other ideas, we will never be united. Everyone has their own idea on how things should work in this world and some are even willing to kill to enforce it.

The only time people are united is when they all share the same idea. When they can set aside their minor differences and come together for something bigger than anything else in their lives. Like an alien invasion.

Imagine aliens were to land on this planet and start fighting. Every single nation would come together and fight side by side. Any differences they might have wouldn't matter.

Your secenario reminds me of a scene in the original version of the great movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still.An alien comes to give us a warning that stop what were doing or be destroyed.He wants to meet with leaders of the world but finds that seems to not be possible with all the divisions in the world.Klattu (the Alien) tells the representative of the President "I am less cynical about humans then you are" when told such a meeting would be impossible.The representative tells him "well I have a little more experience in the politics of the world then you do".In the end Klattu finds the representative knew better and never does get his meeting.

I've already said for many years, and in many threads here, that the biggest problem with the human species is that we are no longer challenged by anything but ourselves, really. Occasionally nature nips at our heels but honestly, there is no real immediate threat, and no new frontiers that we can reasonably hope to conquer in this lifetime. It has earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, tsunamis, fires, hurricanes, etc. The Earth is what, a couple billion years old? Humans have been on it for 100,000-200,000 years. The Earth can and has taken care of itself."

It's not the world that needs saving, it's the human race. We've depleted many of the Earth's resources and we're just shitting bricks because we've been so greedy that we don't know what to do next.

Yep! Friday and Om3ga. Astronomers among others know there is a bigger picture here. My first thought to the question was "The Day the Earth Stood Still". Just goes to show how limited understanding of everything was suddenly confronted with something bigger and deeper than oneself.
