The invisible borders that define American culture.

The sweet tea one isn't accurate. I'm in Baltimore, MD...and sweet tea is everywhere.

The alcohol belt's northern border is from Germany to Denmark, Sweden, etc.

Here in the harbour town of Kiel, every day, ferries from Scandinavia come in, and loads of tourists enjoy the reasonably priced beers and so on.

Up there, an evening with drinks will wreck your purse.

I'm in NY. We think it is cute that others may choose to be different. ;)

In the DelMarVa area (Delaware, Maryland & Virginia,) people that lived in the South migrated to the area. So sweet tea is available,as well as North Carolina Barbeque, etc.

There's a section of the NJ-PA boarder that is quite interesting. In the north we cross west to PA from a rural middle class setting to a very affluent rural area. Come about 30 miles south and we cross into hillbilly country. Come down to Trenton and we go from city slum to towns that,"aren't what we used to be but we kept the blacks out." Very weird.

I grew up in hillbilly country in PA. Actually, I used to have dinners with the Amish. In fact, my family still trades food with them for holidays and invites them over for dinner every now and again.

My family hates Obama with a passion. Mostly because he's black, and ever since he won the election, they've come up with excuse after excuse as to why he's a piece of shit. They hate me now that I told them I'm voting for him this year. Aahhh, Pennsylvania...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hatin' on PA. It's just that cultural divide called the water gap, that isn't that wide, takes you to a whole new land. I used to go to the OTB in East Strasburg with a buddy that lived out there. 5 minutes over the bridge and you are in Podunk with the pickup trucks with gun racks. I roll my own smokes so I hit Morrisville for the tobacco. $13 for a bag vs $45 in NJ so I load up on my way to Philly Park. I wear my Mets jacket there just to hear the Philly fans bust my balls. I tell them at least they aren't Yankee fans, the lowest form of scum on earth and they agree. The women in PA are awesome. Not nearly as tight assed as Jersey or NY women. Not just the ones my age but the younger ones too.

Maryland is southern, but Baltimore has lots of northern influence.

Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri....border states...wanted to secede but couldn't get it together.

Conspiracy...
America is divided in more ways than two. The South should have seceded long ago and should try again soon.

The Mid-West should follow them.

Maryland is only Southern based on the Mason-Dixon line. The impression I've always had was that MD. was a Southern state...until the South started to lose.

IMO; the "South" doesn't really start until somewhere near Richmond, VA.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
There is one other invisible border that defines American regional culture...

You've been had; they're really all incredibly intelligent and just pretend to be dumb because they keep hold of the upper hand; the surprise factor that way.

Back in college my girl friend and I take a bus to Florida. I had never been south of Staten Island. The bus pulls into a stop in Maryland for a break. This little oriental waitress askes for our order with a voice of Ellie May Clampett. Freaked me out.
