The Chihuahua population boom . . . it's Paris Hilton's fault

Chihuahuas are being airlifted out of California after *********** like Paris Hilton caused an overpopulation of the tiny dogs.

****** shelters in California say many people wanted to emulate Chihuahua-toting celebs but have become bored of their pets, causing an overpopulation.

"People don't have them spayed and neutered and they breed in the backyard and then run amok," said Julie St Gregory, spokeswoman for the shelter.
Several trends contributed to the Chihuahua overpopulation in California, especially in Northern California, St Gregory said. It started with the sly Chihuahua star of the Taco Bell commercial. It got worse when heiress Paris Hilton and her friends started wearing the dogs as "arm candy" and made them "purse puppies." Then, the movie came out.
"That has slowed down, but we're still getting a high volume of them,"(Edit I wonder why? Not! /Edit) St Gregory said. "Right now, 70 percent of the dogs we have for adoption are Chihuahuas."
