Suspected ****** *** Pettway surrenders to FBI

BRIDGEPORT -- The woman sought for questioning in the ********** of a sick baby girl from Harlem Hospital two decades ago turned herself in to local police and the FBI late Sunday morning.

Ann Pettway is now in the custody of the FBI in Bridgeport. Agents are attempting to talk to her about the 1987 ********** of Carlina White, known in Bridgeport as Nedjra Nance, who was just 3 weeks old in August of that year when she was ********* from Harlem Hospital while being treated for an illness.

The story of the ********** and White's discovery of her true identity captured the nation's attention last week. It also prompted New York City police to reopen this 23-year-old cold case.

The media attention apparently convinced Pettway to flee her Raleigh, N.C., home late last week and return to Bridgeport, where ****** members live.

However, in fleeing, Pettway brought more attention to herself since she is under the supervision of North Carolina parole authorities after pleading guilty to stealing $130 in cash, a pair of men's pants and a scarf from her then-employer, Hudson Belk, a department store.

FBI Special Agent William Reiner said Pettway is being detained on the North Carolina warrant charging her as an "absconder" for leaving the state without permission.

"North Carolina said they will extradite her," he said.

He said no federal warrant has been applied for yet.

Pettway could be charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. She could be turned over to New York authorities as soon as Monday.

Reiner said the FBI in New York and the New York City Police Department are leading the ********** investigation.

The local probe intensified Saturday afternoon when Joe Davis, who owns two local pawn shops, called police and said she had come to one of his stores to pawn several items, including jewelry. She left on foot before police arrived.
