Study: Distracted driving laws don't stop crashes

A new insurance industry study has found that state laws banning the use of handheld devices to make calls or send text messages while driving have not resulted in fewer vehicle crashes.

The study, released Friday by the Highway Loss Data Institute, examined insurance claims from crashes before and after such bans took effect in California, New York, Connecticut and Washington, D.C.

The organization found that claims rates did not go down after the laws were enacted. It also found no change in patterns compared with nearby states without such bans.

Adrian Lund, the group's president, said the finding doesn't bode well "for any safety payoff from all the new laws."

There will always be wrecks. Now make the vehicles with more steel and not "crumble zones."

Uh... I think (actually, I know) you meant crumple zone. Cookies crumble and cars crumple. I can see how someone with such limited mental faculties could make such as mistake...

They crumble too. Especially if they are Toyotas or Hondas or small vehicles. :hatsoff:

Also, no flaming. :nono:
That was you're intent, not anything else.

Agree to disagree. You were warned.

But you deserve to get flamed.

Fixed! Would you stop abusing my language. No, I didn't flame you. I merely pointed out your flaws - of which there are numerous options from to choose from.

Hey, guys, I'm not saying anyone was necessarily flaming with the intent to do so, but just remember that what you don't consider flaming might be flaming to someone else. If you go on someone's thread with the sole intent to point out his mistakes, that can be considered flaming. I just thought I'd give you guys a friendly reminder before things get ugly, and one of us has to reach for a certain hammer that we have for ugly occasions... :ban2::hammer:

:hatsoff:

Like Gunslingingbird said please cool down and please stop flaming each other for a yes or a no because first it is impossible to agree on everything with everyone, second it makes the atmopshere unfriendly and third it doesn't prove you who is right or who is wrong. I hope this is clear. So please be nice to each other and respect each other no matter and whatever your opinions might diverge/be different.

youre all a bunch of scumbags!
having said that, might i add that of course if laws are eneacted banning texrting a dialing and talking on cel phones, and they are obided by ,then accidents will go down because i am guessing that at least 5 or 10 % of accidents are caused by this today.
of course the insurance companys arent going to admit it, but it must have some effect.

its a good law, if too many today are too dumb to realize the danger of looking down at a phone while driving then sadly a law like this is necessary, for the children, for the children
(actually for every poor sap on the road........and their children)

But i could stand to be corrected

Oh and having read, re-read, and re-re-read the thread ive come to the conclusion that the alleged :flame: occured not when AR corrected WEW but when he stated that he has "limited mental faculties" and that he was "flawed".

I could have been a moderator, I just didnt want to thats all.
seriously nice job gunslinger and georges , you guys are alright.

I'm not sure what the penalties are in the states that have enacted these bans. But my guess is, if the penalties were something like driving school for the first offense, suspension of license for the second offense and a jail term for the third offense, violations would fall.

As for making cars with more steel, that's a bad idea. A more solid/unforgiving structure does not make for a safer vehicle. A crash involves transfers of energy. And a structure that crumples and breaks in a predesigned fashion dissipates energy. That's why racing cars have survival cells, but often shed parts and look like twisted messes after even minor crashes... but these days, the drivers tend to walk away.

Having less cars on the road and people using public transportation would help defeat distracted drivers and the accidents they cause, as well as the accidents they don't cause :hatsoff:

((It's time to ban SUVs and all Toyotas since Toyota sends the U.S. all its cars that don't pass inspection :thefinger :hatsoff:))

They could take more people off the road, by raising the driving age to eighteen.

I will agree with Toyotas, but not SUVs.

Texting/distracted teens, wild elderly driving, and blatant blind driving seems to be a problem.

It could go on. Thing is people are people and they do what they do. Cell phone talking, texting, not paying attention, in the end, hopefully if you are paying attention it can be avoided and no crash.

Simply pay mind to the road ahead and your surroundings. Can't get every horrible driver off the road.

It's widely believed that using the phone when driving (and surprisingly it makes little difference if it's a hand free one) raises the accident risk by at least as much as alcohol at tyhe DUI limit.
As for lessening the amount of traffic the UK has a very high traffic density yet fatalities PER MILE DRIVEN are only a fraction of those in the US. And we have smaller cars too.
I used upper case because someone will otherwise say there are more cars in the US (true) and people drive further (true but not by much)-these factors have been accounted for.

one of the "laws" at FreeOnes is no flaming but i'm sure it goes on every day.

what exactly is flaming? one man's flamer is another man's freedom fighter. :2 cents:

i stepped on a worm this morning. don't worry it's still here. ;)

^^^I think that explains why there hasn't been a successful American in F1 for decades. :D

j/k... If we have more accidents per mile, I'm not sure what the cause of that would be. Lack of driver training maybe? :dunno:

It's called a forum rule if you signed up to the forum you agreed to follow their rules.

Apparently you just can't agree to disagree and move along.
You're not even on the site enough to make a complaint.

It's stupid that there was even a study done on this. I'm no credited expert on the subject, but I'm fairly certain that implementing laws won't prevent people from being stupid and dangerous morons. Especially behind the wheel of a car.

I mean, there are laws that are in put in place that make it illegal for a 12 year old to walk into a bar and start ordering beers. But, those laws don't prevent those 12 year olds from getting drunk.
