Strike May End Soon.

Strike May End Soon, but Writers May Confront a Hostile Hollywood.

As movie and television writers deliberate whether to end a strike that is about to enter its fourth month, they will also have to grapple with a sober realization: the work world to which they return may be even less friendly than the one they left behind.

Over the weekend, Hollywood was swept by hope that the walkout by writers may soon end. The strike has brought most television production to a halt, forced the postponement of studio blockbusters and thrown tens of thousands of people out of work. Major stumbling blocks to a deal between producers and the striking writers, including nettlesome differences over compensation for digital media, were eliminated in informal talks.

Over the next week, leaders of the Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America East will brief their governing groups, even as they begin drafting provisions that could become the backbone of a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

In an e-mailed bulletin on Sunday, the presidents of the two guilds told members they “do not yet have a contract,” and stressed the need for continued picketing.

Update

Tentative Deal Is Reached in Writers’ Strike.

An end to Hollywood’s long and bitter writers’ strike appeared close on Saturday, as union leaders representing 12,000 movie and television writers said they had reached a tentative three-year deal with production companies.

The strike, which began Nov. 5, remains in effect until the governing boards of the two writers’ guilds gauge the sense of their membership in mass meetings on both coasts this weekend and decide whether to end the walkout. The mood at the New York meeting on Saturday afternoon was one of supportive optimism, with a touch of wariness, and the Los Angeles gathering was set to take place late in the evening. The boards are expected to meet as early as Sunday, and the strike could be over by Monday morning.

Maybe I'm just showing my "age" here (or perhaps revealing how I'm not cool/hip anymore  ) but for the life of me: I've never really understood what the whole hoo-hah over the strike is all about.

If I understand it correctly - a bunch of writers aren't writing anymore. As such, lots of TV shows are in re-runs (?) and some new movies aren't coming out.

Is that all?

cheers,

Yup. That's all.

There is so much shit going on in the world; War, poverty, murders, rapes etc...

And hollywood writers believe they are important enough to go on strike and expect the whole world to pay attention to them?

Fuck the strike and anyone who supports it.

i couldnt care less about the writers strike...i just want to watch 24 every monday!

You can't watch it if the writer's aren't there to write the programs. ;)

What does war and murder have to do with a work strike?

Nothing.

They weren't being treated right. When you work you deserve to be paid for your work. The studios and so on need to stop being greedy and pay the people that work for them and stop treating them like farm animals.

Seems like it.

I don't recall the writers guild saying that we should ignore "war, poverty, murders, rapes" and "shit" like that in favor of reporting on their strike though, so I don't see a reason to be upset with them. If they are in the media, it's just like any other time when Paris Hilton says something stupid or Britney Spears goes back to rehab (why do they even bother letting her out anyway?). It's pretty stupid to blame Paris or Britney for that, blame the media instead, and by extension, the idiots who buy the crap. Same thing here; the simple fact is that people care more about what's on TV than they do about war and poverty and all that, and the media is giving them what they want. It sounds pretty bad when you say it straight out, but then again, I've always operated under the theory that humans on the whole are pretty horrible and retarded creatures.

I, for one, am happy that the writers' strike will be over. It has affected entertainment far too long. Well, mainstream entertainment; did the strike even affect Porn Valley or any other porn shoots?

I took advantage of the shows being in re-runs by reading books.

Of course it does. You think you could get away with anything less than professional writers to come up with original scenarios like "guy delivers pizza, sorority girls decide to tip him with something other than money" or "astronaut flies through a black hole and ends up on planet full of horny women somehow", or for that matter, brilliant dialogue such as "oh god, harder!" and "I'm cumming!"?

Somebody wake up on the wrong side of their Mommy today?

I don't understand why it's so hard to get my point. Millionaires complaining they want more money while millions of others suffer.

And yes, pointing this out obviously means I sleep in the same bed as my mother...
