Stolen iPad led to huge meth bust in San Jose

Surely, police must have been on the trail of a major theft ring when they arrived Thursday at an apartment complex in San Jose, only to trip over one of the biggest stashes of methamphetamine ever seized in the United States?

Not exactly.

Palo Alto police were apparently looking for a single stolen iPad when they arrived Thursday at The Woods, a sprawling apartment complex on Snell Road, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.

The cops had tracked the iPad via GPS, said Assistant District Attorney David Tomkins.

The officers didn't have a search warrant, so they knocked on the door of the apartment and asked the occupants for permission to come in. They consented, Tomkins said.

"They probably thought if they didn't, we'd suspect something," Tomkins said. "Or they thought, 'I'll let them in -- they probably won't find anything.'"

Much to their amazement, the officers found 780 pounds of crystal meth scattered around the place, worth about $35 million.

District Attorney Jeff Rosen said roughly 100 pounds or a little more of meth are recovered annually in the county, making this seizure "easily at least six years worth," he said.

No point in trying to understand the reasoning of meth heads.

Ooooh, good plan. Let's see how this one turns out. Hopefully, it's just a small amount of meth in the apartment, and it's easy to overlook.

Wait, what? :surprise:

You had 780 pounds of meth just lying around. And you let the police enter anyway? Are you fucking serious? Unless they have a warrant, you don't open the goddamn door. Fucking slide the iPad under the door and apologize. You don't let them waltz in and look around. C'mon, man!

Somewhere out in Witchita there is a whole trailer park saying "where's our meth?"

It does make me wonder what they would have done if they made somebody go back and get a warrant after they denied them access. 780 pounds of meth doesn't seem like it would be easy to flush.

That's some police force they have in San Jose as the relatively puny Palo Alto PD has to travel some 35 miles south east outside their city limits in order to find ''7 years worth'' of meth.

and no pipe to smoke it in?

thats fucked.

My guess is, the people standing over that huge stash probably got drug tested by their masters on a daily basis. And if any hint of meth was found in their systems, they'd get their lips cut off.

Heck, $35 million is almost like real money. Some cartel boss's kid is probably going to have to go without a solid gold set of Hot Wheels this Christmas. Poor little Hector. That's so sad. :(

Hmm, wonder if they found my iPad there as well.

When you get a new one, you should compete for MacEnstein's Mac Chick of the Month/Year some time in 2012. Heck, just take some pics of you going to the Apple Store and picking it up. That's all Denise Milani did and she won a year or two back.

Really?! Thanks for the head's up babe!!

These guys had 780lbs, $35m worth, of product sitting around in their apartment, and they are stealing iPads? I know no one has ever accused meth addicts/dealers of being particularly savvy, but wouldn't it seem that they could afford their own, non-stolen iPad, as to keep their conspicuousness to a minimum?
