Spike Lee to direct "Oldboy" remake?

^^

...Will Smith involvement -- i def. will not be watching !! fuck me !!!:facepalm::facepalm:

Since Park Chan-wook's South Korean revenge flick "Oldboy" won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004, producers have been trying to find a way to bastardize the project into a more American-friendly version. Steven Spielberg and Will Smith have both been attached to the title since 2008 (after director Justin Lin and Nic Cage dropped out of the running), though rumors have been swirling that the project has been dead in the water for at least a year.

There are basically two camps of thought on an "Oldboy" remake: the people who think that adapting the story of Oh Dae-Su -- a man locked in a hotel room for 15 years and then mysteriously freed in order to find his captors -- from either its original Japanese manga or its cinematic counterpart is a terrible idea ... and those who aren't familiar with the story.

I am a failure to the Korean side of my ******
Watch how tame and watered down it will be.

Spike Lee is a good director. I just dont think he will be able to pull off some of the heavier dramatic moments near the end but I may be wrong. David Fincher,Darren Aronofsky, and Ang Lee,would all be good choices too

Like Zinda, the unofficial Bollywood remake.

Park Chan-wook was a good choice. . .:dunno:

Epic fail. and, as for who would be a good choice.. no one! Even park or Takashi Miike. Why? Cuase, Hollywood would want it watered down. Fuck this remake!! Go watch the original again, instead!!

Spike Lee is definitely a great director, but Oldboy... I don't know. I don't think he's the right director for that kind of movie.
Why remaking Oldboy at all? It's not like Oldboy is poorly produced but has a lot of potential so that it could benefit from a remake. It's perfect the way it is.

Not needed. Won't be as good.

However I will watch it. I like Spike Lee and I like Will Smith so I'm sure it will still be watchable.

This film will be aimed at those lazy fuckers who refuse to watch foregn language films, Hollywood versions never do the originals justice

If Lee decides to direct the remake I will definetly check it out. Good or bad. Also I noticed a lot of filmmakers want to work with Will Smith. I guess because he brings in a serious dollars at the box office.

Will E Worm

Conspiracy...
American-friendly version.

What!? Have you seen some of the movies Hollywood makes?

Spike Lee! S'cuse me!

He made the propaganda, mockumentary : C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America 2004

Peter Griffen, Brothers and sisters fighting is as natural as a white mans dialogue in a Spike Lee movie. Aaarrgghh! :D

Brilliant response.
Well done for contributing to the success of all these shitty yank remakes!

Whatever. If Martin Scorsese was directing Oldboy watch how fast you guys would praise the picture...

"Martin Scorsese directing "Oldboy"?! and Leo DiCaprio as Oh Dae-su?! Fucking epic!!!"

It's not that he wouldn't be able to pull it off,it's that the writers and producers will water it down and turn it into something that it was never intended to be,so those directors wouldn't be able to pull it off either,in that case.

There's absolutely no reason to remake this movie, and for that,I will not see it.I'm sick of American producers cherry picking from Asian cinema. It hardly ever works, because there are certain cultural aspects that just don't translate,so if they are changed from the original movie, then what was the point of making the movie in the first place?

Unless they say that they are going to stay 100% faithful to the source material, and we all know that's not going to happen, then the power of the story is lost, thus a null and void effort in filmmaking.

Hollywood fail...Again.
