COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) -- Unless a federal court intervenes, South Carolina drivers may soon be able to profess their Christian faith with a state-issued license plate.

South Carolina's plate is based on a design by Florida, which was rejected by the state.

The state plans to issue plates featuring a Christian cross and the words "I Believe," but a group advocating the separation of church and state says that goes too far.

A similar design had been considered by Florida's lawmakers, but it was rejected there because of concerns over separation of church and state."

So where is the atheist, jewish, muslim etc. plates South Carlolina? Unbelievable that these people think they should be able to use govt to push their particular religious view and no other view is allowed a plate .

What are the tell tale signs of a slow news day, a story about a crappy christian idea comes up.

Once we got rid of all religion then what are we going to do when theres no news to report. More celebrity news (kill me now)

I might get a number plate (once I get a car) that says:

Fuck Jesus!

They would never let you have that .Thats the problem.

This can result in only bad. What good can possibly come from this? No-one actually cares whether you are a Christian or not.

Goodness knows why people are actually proud of being Christians.

I'm confident someone will sue South Carolina and have this license plate tossed out. It's getting too suffocating to live in America...the Religious Right is forcing itself down our throats..building churches on every corner in America isn't enough..it seems most religions have their own "starbucks" type coffeeshops too..and then they take out Billboards on highways across the nation...now license plates? Uugh.

I have a feeling most of the people that would actually get a plate like that would use it as a cushion from actually having to go to church...the last time I went to church, I didn't see a single car with one of those fish decals, or the even more annoying "praying" Calvin from "Calvin and Hobbes"...

Does that mean that all the gay men will be able to have a great big cock on their number plates?

Straight men will a lovely pair of lady lips?

Or how about just some good old fashion tits?

Satanist could have a small flame thrower or a pitch fork (or would they get mixed up with the farming arsonists?)

I would guess the states are looking at it as a way to make more money. It does seem like it would violate the separation of church and state though. But we already do that enough with government subsidies and tax-exempt status for churches.

that's a good idea, it's going to let you easily spot upcoming drivers that are going to be driving five miles an hour and you can know to not tap the breaks and give them a little push.

It says that they were rejected in Florida, but I do know that several months back they did uphold the legality of similar Christian plates in Illinois.

I don't really think this violates church and state separation because the state isn't really endorsing a religion, they are just making it optional for their citizens to express their religious views on a license plate. Now if they made it the official state plate that everyone had to have, then that would be a violation.

But I also think that it is getting on a slippery slope if they don't allow citizens to have other plates such as atheism, or Islamic designs. I can't see how that wouldn't be construed as favoritism and an endorsement of one religion above others.:2 cents:

me? I don't really give a fuck. My car is not an expression of my spirituality. Religion + oil addiction, what a combination.

I definitely agree with that aspect. Sometimes the "God is my co-pilot", "My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter" and various Jesus-fishes can be hard to spot from a distance.

When I first heard this, I immediately thought it was a clear violation of church and state. But it actually probably isn't. Isn't that separation about the forcing of religion on the public. I guess an example would be to force children in school to sing Christmas songs about Jesus (rather than ones about Santa). In this case, the state is simply offering a tag (for extra money than the typical tag). So isn't this just an example of the state protecting and creating an environment for free religion? I wouldn't be opposed to the state having other religion tags either. The state is not inherently atheist. It protects rather than discourages religion. Therefore, I'm actually not opposed to this if we're going to have "specialty" plates.

You can get personalized plates, but not specially designed plates of a certain religion - except for this one.

How could they have plates of other religions already when this is the first religious one in that state? You can't get to all religions without having a starting point. And where else would one start? It's not like Islam makes up more than 50% of the US' population. It's only logical to start with the one with highest following. By doing this, certainly other religions will follow and it won't be contested because there is no case against it.

Oh and way to promote your socialism out of nowhere at the end.
