LOS ANGELES—Only twice since the NHL expanded to the west coast in 1967 has a U.S. team west of Dallas finished with the league's best record. Colorado accomplished that feat both times—and the San Jose Sharks are making an impressive bid to join them.
Ryane Clowe scored in the first period on San Jose's only power play of the game and got the deciding goal in the shootout to lead the Sharks to a 3-2 victory on Monday night, setting an NHL mark for the most points through the first 30 games.
San Jose's 52 points surpassed the 1929-30 Boston Bruins, who also won 25 of their first 30 games.
