Was sadden to wake up today and here the death of Robert McNamara. I've been following this guy since I first saw Fog of War in 2005. I've always been interested in War history and this guy was right in the middle of the Cold War & Vietnam.

If you have not seen Fog of War, it is a must see documentary.

Best middle name evar! RIP Robert Strange McNamara.

RIP Robert McNamara (1916-2009); your efforts to understand your own mistakes have done much good, even as those mistakes did so much harm . . .

I agree The Fog of War by Werner Herzog is a must see.. Really brings insight into the Vietnam War and McNamara.

Agreed wholeheartedly. It's amazing how willing he was to admit his mistakes and address the effects they had.

i remember in 1968 having a high school debate for or against american involvement in Vietnam. i was on the against team. after studying the issues, i realized that it was their national war and that the domino theory was wrong. i never understood how others like McNamara could not see that when it was seemed obvious to a kid like me :dunno:

Because unfortunately, at the time a LOT of people believed it, plus you had the advantage of hindsight. For folks who didn't grow up in the COld War era, it's difficult to explain the sense of impending doom that hung over everything. It was literally an undeclared war for the world and that mentality drove actions on both sides that look naive now.

RIP RSM.

Minor correction: The Fog of War was directed by Errol Morris. It is a great documentary & well worth checking out.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
All too late he realized the folly of his own mistake. Still, he was man enough to face up to it and you have to admire him for that.

A lot of people forget he was the hot-shot whiz-kid president of Ford before he became defense secretary.

RIP Mr. McNamara.

Thinking about him and others that came before and after him has made me realize something, a lot of our defense secretaries have really really sucked at their jobs.
