Rickey Henderson, Jim Rice Elected to Hall of Fame

Conspiracy...
Rickey Henderson dashed into the Hall of Fame on his first try, Jim Rice made it with a final swing.

It's hard to imagine their induction speeches will have much in common, either.

"I'm going to leave all the stories to Rickey," Rice said, confirming that his remarks in Cooperstown this summer are likely to match his personality. "Believe me, it's going to be short and quick. I don't think you need to go there and talk for 15 or 20 minutes when you can get right to the point."

That never stopped Henderson - but neither did opposing pitchers or catchers during his 25-year career.

The undisputed standard for leadoff hitters, Henderson received 94.8 percent of the vote from the Baseball Writers' Association of America in balloting announced Monday, well above the 75 percent needed.

Rice, among the game's most feared sluggers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, got 76.4 percent in his 15th and final year on the ballot after falling just shy with 72.2 percent last year.

"The only thing I can say is I'm glad it's over with," the Boston outfielder said. "I'm in there and they can't take it away."

Top prime cut of beef they're the Baseball Writers Association of America's choice; they got to be elected....

Congratulations to Rickey Henderson and to Jim Rice for attaining Major League Baseball's equivalent of an appointment to Mt. Olympus!!

Interesting story about the incident occuring at a game being played at Fenway Park on Aug. 7, 1982, when Jim Rice came to the aid of a young fan who was severly injured by a foul ball.

Wow, Henderson I thought would be a first rounder.
Rice I always thought was worthy also, he was a dominate force of the late 70's - early 80's.
His problem was that he was unliked by many reporters and players.
kind of a jerk off at times.i remember a fan stole his hat right off his head at yankee stadium.
rice actually chased the guy up into the stands, followed by most of the red sox team......
wish i had the video.
good news.

Rickey Henderson is only behind Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, and Roger Clemens as the best player of the last 30 or 40 years, and considering even two of the people above him are under heavy suspicion of steroid use it makes Henderson's election to the Hall of Fame a no-brainer.

I remember in my old Status Pro Baseball game, Hendricks was an automatic steal.

Out here in the Bay Area, everybody knew Rickey would make it, but they all up in arms about him not being a unanimous choice. I agree but not going bonkers over it. The steals records he has will never be broken unless players in the future start wearing jet-packs. Almost 300 HR's from the leadoff spot, incredible. Rickey was the greatest leadoff hitter ever. As for the voters, I dont think there will ever be a unanimous vote. How Willie Mays or Babe Ruth werent perfect then no one is.
