Redwings: greatest professional sports team ever?

They sure are very good team, but I wouldn't call them the greatest ever. Maybe the greatest team in past 20 years in ice hockey.

I know nothing about hockey. But knowing the history of most of the major sports teams in America, I'd have to disagree. That is a loaded question b/c it's damn near impossible to compare teams form different eras, let alone different sports.

Not a chance. I'd name the Yankees and the Montreal Canadiens above and beyond the Redwings. Both teams have around 50 championships between them. The Red Wings have 11. The Wings maybe top 5, but not the greatest by a mile.

Yeah. Agreed.

But I mean "professional sports team ever"... hmm... I don't think so. C'mon, they play one sport; while there are so many other sports team that can be defined as great! They may be quite exceptional in the NHL, but not in the whole league of sports. However, people still have many opinions on which team is the greatest in each sports league.

I like the Redwings, but the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers along with the teams you listed are probably a more dominate team in their sport than they are. If you go way back the Redwings don't even have the greatest number of championships in hockey. Of course all the other hockey teams with a lot of championships were part of the originals that won them way back then and haven't been good like the Redwings have been in like 30 years now. It's harder to win them now and the Redwings have come close in that time to getting three or four more that they just missed out on.

The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
The Broad Street Bullies might have something to say about that...

I'd be willing to include them in the annals of the Greatest Teams in History. They have been so good for so long. EVERY postseason, there they are, and they almost ALWAYS go deep. Very few other teams in any sport are able to consistently contend for their sports' highest honor.

Red Wings, Packers, Yankees, Steelers.......I think they deserve to be in that crowd.

Americans view on sport is just hilarious. Ask an amercan about a great sports team and they can name lots of teams from baseball and american football (sports that are tiny, almost non-existant in most areas in the world) while the by far biggest sport in the world is completely ignored (that´s football for those that don´t know). I would put such teams as Manchester United, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona far, far ahead of any baseball, american football, basketball or ice hockey team.

Well the thread was based on U.S. Hockey, which does have players from the world involved. I am sure the Man U and Real Madrid are solid teams worthy of acclaim, but not over here, sorry...

Not the throw spears, but Americans still dont support football (soocer) at the level the world does. That is not a crime, just the way it is....

I apologize for all Americans. In defense of us we only like sports that don't suck are are worth watching or playing. (Except Rugby, that doesn't seem too bad.) I blame the UK. If they would have never spread that that God forsaken sport around the world in the first place we wouldn't be in this mess. You have to admit with soccer, tennis, cricket, and golf among others, they just aren't that good at inventing them. (I actually notice they usually aren't that good at playing the sports they have invented either but that's another matter.) Soccer over here is something adolescent girls play until they move on to a real sport. That's why our women’s team is the only one that's ever been good. ;)
