Raider Hate!

I never really understood why so many people hated the Raiders so much. I didn't really get into football until around 1990. Whenever I would talk to co-workers and friends and friends of my friends about football, one thing always remained constant. . . .the hate for the Raiders. I would always hear things like "Well, the football year will be great so long as the fucking Raiders don't make the playoffs." My personal favorite was always " Isn't that god awful thug owner of the Raiders dead yet?" This always baffled me, until today when I ran across this. . . .

Gotta admit, I laughed my ass off for about 2 straight hours.

I have a soft spot for the Raiders. Al Davis needs to go though. He's just too crazy for the game these days.

A lot of its rooted in the fact that Al Davis is a self-gratifying psychopath who has consistently screwed over the league and its fans. To include repeated attempts to prevent there being any kind of new franchise expansion to Los Angeles, just cuz he wants to keep that option open should he arbitrarily decide to fuck over Oakland again and move back to LA. The franchise chews up and spits out young players who might have flourished elsewhere. On top of that, they think they can build lasting teams through expensive, over the hill free agents like the Yankees do. And its fans need to learn to chill. the. fuck. out.

I sympathize. The impulse to like the Raiders is strong. I've been there. Got hooked for a season or two on those Rich Gannon/Jerry Rice/Charles Woodson teams of '01 and '02. Thought the uniforms were totally fuckin' badass. Loved the history of Super Bowl XI.

Eventually, you just learn to be consistently annoyed with the Raiders. They never grow up.

And such is why I so often find myself cheering the Broncos during the obligatory annual Monday night game between the two. Because while I'm far from a certifiable Denver fan, thats a franchise I can respect...that knows how to build and nurture talent, does right by its fans and the game.

Perfectly stated !

These days I only drive up to ''the Oak'' for the A's vs Yankees or A's vs Boston series but, as far as football and the Raiders are concerned, I'll just have to forfeit my fanfare 'till Al kicks off. :uohs:

Well put. I have known for awhile actually that Al Davis is nothing more than a gangster in a business suit. Then again, most businesses nowadays are run by what I like to call "Legal Gangsters". This term can even be used to describe certain aspects of the United States government.

Holy Hell! I completely missed that.

Well I'm going tobe honest I did not take the time to read this whole thread just the first two lines of your post and the reason I hate the Raiders is simple I'm a Denver Broncos' fan and the Raiders suck:thefinger

The Raiders are the opposite of a winning franchise. Not because they tend to lose most of their games, but because their M.O. is the opposite of winning teams like Indianapolis or, as much as I hate them, New England. Those teams have a system where the things that work for the organization are nurtured and allowed to thrive, and the things that don't work are ironed out and disposed of. The Raiders have a system where the things that work for the organization are left out to fester until they're no longer useful, and the things that don't work are allowed to grow like a cancer, sapping the energy out of the positives of the team.

The first thing they need to do is to fire that asshole owner of theirs. Al Davis is the source of their problems. He rules over the team like a godfather over the family. He thinks that intimidation is a good way of getting respect from the league, the players, and the fans. Too bad for him his team's in Oakland, and it takes A LOT more to intimidate someone from Oakland than an asshole team owner with no loyalty to the city.

He mismanages the team by not hiring someone competent to make decisions. Don't think that's true? I've got two words for you: JaMarcus Russel. Yeah, so he looked like the quarterback of the future for the team, but when he proved to be otherwise he should've been replaced by someone who could get the job done. Instead, they kept him in, and built his legacy as a dud. It's so obvious to the fans that they actually paid for a billboard that says, "Mr. Davis, the fans have one thing to ask from you: hire a GM." just up 880 from the Coliseum.

Another reason why they're the opposite of a winning team is the perception of the players in the community. Other teams' players, with a few exceptions, are role models for the community, getting involved in youth programs and community activities. The Raiders, though, don't seem to hire anyone who doesn't have a criminal background.

Lastly, and this one doesn't have to do with the team itself, but is part of the reason why the Raiders are disliked, are the fans. Just like the players, it seems like being an ex convict is a prerequisite for being a fan. They wonder why their games never sell out and are always blacked out on local networks. Well, when you intimidate other teams' fans your games aren't gonna sell out. I read a statistic once about how normally 25% of the crowd is made up of fans of the visiting team, but, due to intimidation from the fans, a normal crowd at the Coliseum is only 10% visiting team fans. Maybe with the missing 15% they'd be able to sell out their games and not have them blacked out. I know I'd never go to the Coliseum to watch the Dolphins just for fear of not getting out alive. I was told once by someone who was at a game against the Broncos how after the game, which the Raiders naturally lost, there was a man wearing a Broncos hat walking out of the stadium with his family. Suddenly, out of the crowd someone punched the man in the face, and 3 people kicked the shit out of him while he was on the ground. And they wonder why other teams' fans are afraid to go to Raiders games.

this is why im glad i live in SF. our teams may be in losing streaks, but theyre not surrounded in controversy, everyone loves us

HELL NO! I LOVE THE OAKLAND RAIDERS! I Don't give a fuck what anybody says or thinks. The RAIDERS have always been my favorite team of all-time and always will be! :yesyes::bowdown::glugglug:

I've loved the menacing killer logo on the Raiders helmet ever since I was a youngin. and I have been a devoted long distance member of the hated RAIDERS NATION. ever since. :)scream: YEAH BABY!!! in Austin Powers voice.)

The Raiders are just in a funk right now...give them time and they'll be back. Just look at my Saints, they sucked almost all of their time being in the NFL, they weren't even decent till 2006.

The Raiders suck because they are from Oakland. :2 cents:

I like the Raiders.

Kenny Stabler used to drink beer at practice.

I always thought that was cool. Liked them since I was a kid.
