Just watched on the BBC:

Radio Frequency Identification (or RFID) is an automatic identification method relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags - a small object that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, ******, or person.
One application for the RFID tags would be replacing the familiar barcodes on everyday supermarket products. The tags would hold a unique ID number which emit radio waves that can be tracked and scanned. In effect it would be a "talking barcode."
Many large companies are keen to use these RFID tags because they will help keep track of the goods they are shipping from warehouses out to stores or regional offices. Currently RFID tags are relatively expensive so most are used to log what is in boxes of goods rather than to label individual items (the above image for example is a RFID tag used by Wal-Mart).
Another beneficial application for RFID is in hospitals to label medicines ensuring that ***** were used before they expired and, in conjunction with tags worn by patients, could make sure the right treatment was administered.
However on the debit side, consumers are very concerned about the use of RFID tags, according to a survey in the UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands. More than half of 2,000 people taking part in the survey said they had privacy worries about the tags.
Some consumer groups have also expressed concern that the tags could be used to monitor shoppers once they had left shops with their purchases.

So - those are the facts (thanks to info from the BBC & Wikipedia). What do you think?
