Air passengers' mid-flight terror as hole is blown in Qantas 747 fuselage

Passengers on a London to Melbourne flight have described their terror after a faulty door "popped" in midair blowing a hole in the fuselage.

Qantas flight QF30, with 300 passengers and crew on board, plunged 20,000ft after the faulty door caused an "explosive" depressurisation.
The Boeing 747 had just taken off from a stopover in Hong Kong when the incident happened. As the plane dropped from 30,000ft to 10,000ft, oxygen masks fell from the ceiling.

By all accounts, it sure appears as if a bomb let go. Of course they'll never tell us the truth about anything.

Just keep shoppin' . . keep flying . . "there's nothing to worry about".

They say flying is safer than driving. But it depends on how you measure the statistics. In terms of per mile flying is safer, in terms of per minute spent on vehicle/airplane I heard driving is safer.

Can't remember where I read that, and I wouldn't go to the bank with that information... but worth thinking about... statistics can easily be manipulated one way or the other!

Looks like Qantas isn't as safe as Dustin Hoffman would have us believe...

Here's a video that was taken by a passenger while the plane was trying to make an emergency landing.

Plus there going by an average person and not every driver is average. When your flying your fate is almost totally in other people's hands. When your driving much of what happens you control. So if you are an above average and safer driver those statistics could be deceptive.

I heard that a simple way to put it is that you are much more likely to have an accident when you step into your car than when you go on a plane.

I have to slightly disagree with what D-Rock said. Yes its true that when you're driving much of what happens is in your control but this doesn't take into account the other drivers on the road who could be driving dangerously and thus crash into you, which is completely out of your own control but can still be very damaging to you.

what the fuck you lookin at?
If I were on that plane I would have had to change my underpants after that!

the way I always looked at it is that the statistics about lightning strikes mean fuck all to the one billionth person.

That's why I said much and not all of what happens. Even then good drivers often can sense when things are about to go wrong and move away from the situation before it happens. Sure, there will be instances where somebody causes and accident where there is nothing you can do, but when you are in a plane your just along for the ride for good or ill.
