Decided to jump the gun here and start the PS4 thread before tonights supposed PS4 announcement.

Below are some links to the live coverage starting at 6pm EST in NYC

I'd post all the speculated rumours going around the net about what the PS4 will be but since we are only an hour away I think we can just wait and see.

I can't believe they had a big reveal event today without even showing the actual console.. Another reason to be an xbox gamer :D

While I was disappointed that we didn't see the actual console, to me that was the least important thing. I was amazed they released the specs of the system (so so so glad it's going to be 8gb of RAM) and I was impressed with what they showed and it sounds like they developed something that developers will find easy to produce for.

Specs:

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be powered by a custom 8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and "next-generation" AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84 teraflops. As detailed at the event, it will come paired with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused PCs on the market. As expected, the system will ship with a Blu-ray drive, built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI, Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague "AUX" port. Each system will ship a "Mono Headset" for cross-game chat and other social features.

My only real complaint with what they have shown so far is the controller with the tiny tiny touch screen in the middle, what's the point of that thing!?

i wish i got to see anything.... they couldn't keep the live stream running! i saw about 4 minutes of the announcement then the stream froze and i spent 25 minutes trying like hell to get it back! and there were a lot of comments about the feeds not working!

Don't think you missed much. Game sites should now have everything you want to see in seperate smaller streams.

As for them not showing the console, its really not a big deal in my opinion thats just a cosmetic thing that sits beside your tv. I'd never make a decision to buy it based on what it looks like.

During a roundtable discussion today, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida apologized to gamers for not showing the device itself.
"I'm sorry we did not show the hardware," Yoshida said. "But we have plans from now--in February--through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things."

If Sony had shown off a PS4 unit last night, it would not have been representative of the final design. Yoshida was asked, "is the final hardware finished?" to which he bluntly responded, "No, it's not.

The internals was confirmed more or less and thats what matters. Some games showing off its power, wish they showed a bit more but I guess E3 would be lame if they did that all now. I'm not thrilled about the social networking market that they keep pushing, but if thats where they see the business boom then so be it. M$ will do the same for Xbox720 I'm sure.

Two things I am happy to hear is that it will not require an "always-on" internet connection and used games will not be banned. Although, just like this generation, some developers will still use the online-pass scheme for used games and possibly block more features in the next gen for used games.

M$, you're up next.

what i don't understand is SONY wants this console out by holidays of this year and i have seen many many MANY times in gaming mags that most game developers have not been able to use the PS3 to its full capacity USE for their games...
if the game companies & game developers can't use the PS3 to its full potential why come out with a new BETTER system that these same developers & companies won't be able to use PS4 to its full potential????:dunno:

The architecture has changed from what the PS3 was to PC-Based
“A PC-based architecture (Intel chips in the case of Xbox) should have a number of advantages over custom-developed silicon: for one, the learning curve for software developers will be shorter than completely new technology.

From what was said in the anouncement last night, Sony went to developers first to see what they wanted/needed to make developing games easier and what not. So next gen should be in the favour of the developer it seems which should be good for all us gamers on either platform.

knows petras secret: she farted.
im waiting for the playstation 15. but the playstation 20 is gonna be better, they speculate.

Color me not too impressed with the new controller. The basic design they have had since the first playstation has been the best controller of any major system ever. The least they could have done was keep the same shape. They shouldn't fix what isn't broke.

Well I think Sony is looking good on the PS4, too bad we didn't see the console displayed at the event but we have E3. Also Sony is going to not make the mistake like the prices. I wasn't going to pay $600.00 for an system but didn't get an PS3 until 2010. They say the system will be rumor $425.99 and $525.99 which is an good thing because it better then paying $600.00 but there rumor that it could go under $400.00, we will see at E3.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why Sony revealed the consoles specs? Wont this play into the 720s hands? Wonder if theres a chance the specs are more powerful than Sony has stated? I would be interested in peoples opinions on this.

I think they were focus on the games, so far it getting good review but we got E3 on the console and the prices. There are talk bout been under $400.00 which is much better then $600.00. I didn't buy an PS3 for fours years until 2010 when I 1st got mine. I think Sony have learned there lesion from PS3, and they know they can't make a mistake on PS4. The only way the PS4 will win this gen is the price but I think Sony will played it smart.

I don't understand why people complain about Dualshock 1-3, it's always fit like a glove to me, sure it can get a little warm at times.

I signed up with Gamestop to be notified as soon as they start taking preorders for the PS4. I figure there's going to be massive shortages as usual when both consoles launch this fall. I'm going with the PS4 initially this time. I got burnt by the 360 hardware failures (twice) last time.

I did that too because I'm a Power Reward Member, it been getting good review from developer so far, but we have to wait and see at E3 because E3 will be a big test. We will see the consoles and prices (My guess it will be $399.99)
