Porn Stars: The Death of a Sex-Industry Profession

Not sure if posted before but an interesting article so read it again :D

“The market is oversaturated now,” says Brooklyn Lee. Lee is porn’s latest It girl. At the AVN Awards, Lee, 22, won five awards, including Best New Starlet. She says: “There used to be a few hundred girls and now there are thousands. So porn superstars have fallen by the wayside. There aren’t girls like Tera and Jenna, who transcend the boundary of the industry anymore.”

Makes a lot of sense. Seems like the economy has a lot of girls running to be in porn. And it makes me think of Blue Countach's thread about too many OCSMs that have not really done anything. I mean even freeones has girls on the main site that have done absolutely nothing other than make a twitter account or a facebook page. Over saturated is the perfect word, over saturated with girls who don't want to or can't get real jobs and girls who don't even want to be a REAL porn star.

Thanks for the good read Roald. :hatsoff:

She's spot on when she says no one transcends the industry anymore. I have thought for a long time that it is stupid for the industry to expect all the girls to perform the same. They are pressured to do anal, DP, Double anal, double vag, face fuck etc.....then do it all over again with IR. If not, their career is brief.

No one is even given the opportunity to establish themselves as unique in any given genre.

Same can be said about male talent. Trend is to thump the fuck outta the ladies, now most male performers do just that.

The article is very, very true.

The one line in that article makes me think of guys on this site calling all these random girls porn stars. A porn star and a girl that does porn are two different things. A star is someone that almost anybody recognizes. Yet there are all these threads on FreeOnes posted asking for such and such examples of porn stars, and all these other members post content of different girls, referring to them as porn stars. I see this pretty often on here.

It's not only that girls don't want to find real jobs, but it's also because in the modern world, sexual expression is less frowned upon. So more girls are more open to doing it because society isn't so prude anymore. When I used to do actual porn (videos and b/g), I did it because it was fast money, and yeah, I didn't want a regular job. I don't do that type of stuff of anymore, I currently only do photo content that's solo or g/g, which pays much less. I make anywhere from $20-$60 per month off my site, which is really not enough at all. So I do have a real job. If I didn't, I wouldn't have a home. My comfort is much more important to me than money. A real job is more stable. I am considering making a homemade masturbation video to get more members, but it sucks that I have to do what it is I didn't want to do to begin with, just to make money. I'm also considering calling my website quits in a few months if I don't get more members. I put in hours upon hours of time and work into my site, and for what? $20? Sometimes no check at all? It's not worth it. But I still work at it because I absolutely love shooting.

This industry is really, really tough.

Yep. If someone can think of it, it's already been done. There is nothing new to do to girls in porn anymore. And there's so much content out there and people just want more and more and more, harder and harder, rougher and rougher, more explicit. So the girls have to keep doing more and more.

I read in an article in a magazine a couple months ago about a survey that was done regarding the type of content most people watch. Girls being abused won by a landslide. Girls being hit, thrown around, smacked, choked, spanked, tied up, whipped, paddled, hair pulling, and having cocks jammed into her like there's no tomorrow. It's sad, really, and honestly, it disgusts me. So it's like... if girls want to make a real living off porn, this is the shit they almost have to do. They won't in the beginning because they're new, but after some time, this is what they'll be asked to do, and slowly but surely, if they don't do it, they will fade away from the scene.

The market is for sure oversaturated, but so is the energy drinks market, the mainstream hollywood market, the cars market and many other markets. The pornstar figure is simply evolved and those who understood this are still a few tens among the thousands of adepts. A pornstar today can't just rely on making movies anymore, that's for sure. Being a pornstar today means running a business, employing people, creating assets, planning on a long term, setting and handling a budget and those girls who do this earn possibly more than in the golden days. Before you watched porn and you paid for it because there was a crazy chick who was willing to perform a dp scene; today you must create and sell a brand, diversifying your stream of income and using the shooting just as a tool to establish your brand. In few words, porn is slowly turning into an industry, while before was a rollercoaster in the Luna Park of entertainment. Beside the attempts to shut it down, it's just a matter of time when the adult industry will become perfectly legitimate and will cross the boudaries of mainstream; then you will see hot and sexy Brooklyn Lee advertising energy drinks on cable and in Time Square. Am i visionary? We'll see.

Actually I dont fully agree. What you say is exactly what I saw the last 3 years yes. However since half a year the demand for X-Art type of content is massive. Only few companies (for example: x-art, PassionHD, Sex-art, Joymii) jumped on this so far but the ones who are doing it are doing really well. In my honest opinion I think people are getting tired of the rough no passion plastic type of sex.

This is just based on our own stats but I hear it from a few other people too and I am very glad about it as I cant stand the foot on face porn type of crap.

With all the negative attention on porn I really doubt this will ever become reality. I do hope so but nah im not holding my breath on it ;)

Edit: ‘Vigorous’ Santorum crackdown may catch Internet porn viewers with pants down

This is also true. It will take a little bit of time for the x-art style to be the biggest thing though.

That is so true. The word "pornstar" has been so devaluated, it doesn't mean anything anymore.
Back in the days, pornstars were girls that every one use to know. They were girls who were stars in the porn business
Now, any teen touching herself in front of a webcam claims to be a pornstars

Thanks for the interesting read Roald.

I feel like this provides a glimpse into what somebody in the porn industry might be thinking when they try to make the crossover into other forms of media. After all, how many times can somebody say that they've seen someone who they know to work in pornography writing, as a cameo or extra in television or film, or (god forbid) doing something in music?

I agree that the industry has most likely become over-saturated, but to me it seems like (and this may in fact be due to too many new people coming in) there's no more glamour or sense of groundbreaking in the industry than there has been in the history of porn. Way back in 1972, when Deep Throat was released, it launched the "porno chic" or "Golden Age of Porn" era, with the film itself becoming noteworthy and many stars of the day and age becoming commonly known. They became known as stars and celebrities, generally surpassing the standard popularity of their profession.

Flash forward to any point, let's say, after 2008. With the recession hitting, DVD sales hitting all-time lows, and internet tube sites rising, it takes a lot more for a girl to be properly marketed, especially considering the influx of girls now relying on it as a standard profession. Long gone (for the most part) are the storylines (revolving around more than "Here I am delivering your pizza" or such), the promotional budgets, and most importantly, the starpower that surpasses only those in the industry itself. And nowadays, where anal, DPs, creampies, and such are commonplace and often required to have a stable career, they for the most part were a rarity when pornography was first becoming widespread. Quoting the article, "stars are now interchangeable" and a name doesn't draw as much attention now as it seems that a specific act will do.

I'm sure some of what I've said sounds like I'm talking out of my ass or whatever, but I feel it's just food for thought.

"The sex is the only part about being a porn star these days that is not hard work" say Brookly Lee ?? yes & No..Of cause in all job's can be easily star (photographer, model, game designer...) you must av more talented.

Xxx it's not a game in 2012. It's so difficult to be star because there are lot's girls but we can be "Super star us" example Lisa Ann. But in Europe we see more European girl Czech, Hungry, Russia, Roumania.... mosts beauty & hard than us stars. Porn Stars is not Death

Everything changed. Before a porn star was a girl you just couldn't imagine to meet one day or if so you met here at an expo or a X-Biz event and she was like a goddess. But now, with social network it seems like you could be her friend. You may know here private life, what she eats, how she wakes up the morning, her cat's name... But porn business changed too, porn stars were doing a lot a huge movies but now you have many new girls doing some amateur gonzo style videos. Also, I'm quite sure that most of people want to see girls they can meet some days, I really think that girls next door is a real turn on for a lot of guys. Who never had a little wank thinking of your neighbor, house mate, colleague... ?
I had :)

So I guess, if we haven't so much porn stars is because people start to be bored with. I can be wrong lol

One thousand years ago somebody already tried to crack porn down. Fail. Sanctorum moral will be gone with him, while people's ancestral and natural instinct of showing off, getting and giving pleasure, making money with the one and only natural asset that human beings have - the body - will live for as long as we don't go extinct.

Jenna and Tera entered business at the right time; The internet made them into big stars, along with good marketing by themselves, Vivid, and Wicked and their agents, when the market was much less saturated. Sasha Grey and Jesse Jane have done very good marketing themselves in a much more saturated porn industry. Gianna Michaels is the one girl, I think could pull it off.

I think this anti-obscenety/porn campaign plans won't possibly cost him a rather large part of voters.

Take away my porn? Hell no :D

I'm gonna have to agree with you, bro. I believe it was one of our Founding Fathers Patrick Henry who said it best when he said, "Give me Pornography or Give me Death!"
