Peyton Manning as SI's SOTY. Are you kidding me?

First, I am not a huge Manning fan. He is a fantastic QB and may be the best regular season QB ever. I simply don't root for him. His comeback from a career-threatening neck injury is courageous and has been amazing. That said, how the hell is he the Sportsman of the Year? Was the year so bland a comeback is worthy of this prestigious award? It seems more like lifetime achievement recognition instead of a year's work. I am interested to read other's opinions on this. LeBron James had a phenomenal year, David "Big Papi" Ortiz was the leader of a team that wasn't expected by most to win it all and was instrumental in the city of Boston bouncing back from the marathon bombing. Winning a championship should not be a requirement, but it helps an athlete's other platforms receive publicity. Your thoughts?

I would tend to disagree with their choice. He's accomplished nothing extraordinary other than he has been wearing a Broncos uniform for the past 2 seasons and still can beat Tom Brady (whom I despise).

It should change this season, but one stat is undeniable: Tim Tebow has more playoff wins as a Bronco QB than Peyton. It is a lame stat and argument, but having grown up a Raiders fan, I don't care. Keep putting stock in Peyton. They will lose a shoot-out in the AFC Champ Game.

Fixed. Sorry....my bad.

I think I have learned not to start any more threads in here. Was hoping for a spirited discussion but I get the feeling most people see my name and ignore. I do appreciate your posts, Jagger. Merry Christmas.

Now you know how I feel in the NHL thread. Hello??? Is there anybody in there?? Oh wait....is that you, Feller???!!

Merry Christmas to you too, Feller. You're one of the good ones.

I would love to partake in a spirited discussion, but I don't follow the NFL enough to have any knowledge on this topic.

Sorry feller.

I'm not familiar with SI's SOTY award. If it's just performance based I question who else to give it to if it's not given to Manning. The only other realistic choice would be Lebron and considering Manning is having one of the best years in the history of his sport I don't see how even he would be a good pick over Manning this year.

So I did some looking this up. I don't think he's a bad choice for Sportsman of the year. I think there's more to the award than merely picking someone having a good year. If that were the case, it'd be hard not to give it to Sidney Crosby, who is having an outstanding year. I think there's a recognition here that Manning has made a remarkable recovery, he just broke a record for most TD throws in a season, and he's just a really classy guy who not only plays with integrity, but lives his life with integrity, too.

Or is it merely an award for whoever they think is the best athlete for the year? Because then Manning is not the right choice.

He leaves beating Brady (who annoys me) to his younger brother....who beats him like a rented mule.

I do like both Manning brothers. I think he has had a good year. Just clinched the division and set an NFL record. Not too shabby.

Who should be the SOTY?

I put LeBron and Papi in my original post.

Yup. Very valid. They don't excite me, but they would work.

You did a good job with your selections. I was wondering if anyone else had other opinions.

I don't have other options myself. I would tend to agree with you, but have no issue with Petyon.

I understand it is partly a popularity contest to market SI.

I think this was a life-time achievement award by SI. Reading the article(s), it addresses Peyton's entire life.

Crosby is soft, so I wouldn't go with him

That's my impression, too. Does that make you feel any better about the award?

He'd fuck you up for saying so, dude. Seriously.

Also, do you not agree that he is one of the more entertaining athletes to watch who is currently playing?

he's a great player but I feel overrated I would take it Evgini Malkin of the Penguins before Crosby. And on skates, yes he would, on solid ground he wouldn't stand a chance. No offense

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
The Sheriff absolutely deserves this award. Remarkable comeback from injury last year, record number of TDs and yards (likely) this year, and a probable 5th regular season MVP. I'm not sure what else he could do to deserve the award.

Ortiz failed a drug test, he can fuck off. Lebron has a great supporting cast and should be winning titles.

If you think he's overrated, then you don't watch much hockey. He is the most entertaining player to watch, bar none. He can score anywhere on the ice and is very adept at setting up his teammates. Dude is a true game changer.

However, I would like to point out though that Captain Serious has more Stanley Cup wins and Conn Smythe trophies than he does.
