Obama to allow oil drilling off Virginia coast

WASHINGTON – In a reversal of a long-standing ban on most offshore drilling, President Barack Obama is allowing oil drilling 50 miles off Virginia's shorelines. At the same time, he is rejecting some new drilling sites that had been planned in Alaska.

Obama's plan offers few concessions to environmentalists, who have been strident in their opposition to more oil platforms off the nation's shores. Hinted at for months, the plan modifies a ban that for more than 20 years has limited drilling along coastal areas other than the Gulf of Mexico.

Obama was set to announce the new drilling policy Wednesday at Andrews air base in Maryland. White House officials pitched the changes as ways to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign oil and create jobs — both politically popular ideas — but the president's decisions also could help secure support for a climate change bill languishing in Congress.

The president, joined by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, also was set to announce that proposed leases in Alaska's Bristol Bay would be canceled. The Interior Department also planned to reverse last year's decision to open up parts of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. Instead, scientists would study the sites to see if they're suitable to future leases.

Obama is allowing an expansion in Alaska's Cook Inlet to go forward. The plan also would leave in place the moratorium on drilling off the West Coast.

Drill maybe drill?

Is Harry Stamper going to be the one doing the drilling?

We need oil. And dammit, Virginia is a commonwealth. That'll teach 'em.

I'm going to take a stab in the dark and guess that you are a big Barack Obama fan. Am I right?

No. I am a fan of Jayden Jaymes among others. I voted for Obama because I supported his platform and I discuss politics....put the two together.

However, I'm not so much a fan of this policy but on the other hand it would be worse if he wasn't pushing conservation issues as a cornerstone of his presidency.

I would be posting the same types of posts were GWB or Clinton POTUS.

That answer your "question"?

I'm not sure. :dunno:

Which statement is true.
a) You're not a Barack Obama fan?
b) You're a fan but not a big one?
c) You're a big Barack Obama fan?

I'm not a "fan" of people like politicians. I either agree with them or I don't. There is nothing fan-worthy about political agreement IMO.:dunno:

I voted for the guy because I agree with him not because he sings a song on American "Idle" or played in Terminator or talks with a twang.

^ Right, I get it.

Obama is a closet Republican. I want my vote back

Whichever one of his advisors is telling him to "be a Republican" should be fired immediately. This is not the change we voted for. Drilling off of an American coastline. Unfuckingbelievable...for, essentially, nothing more than votes from idiots!!!

Will Obama do anything for Liberal Americans?

Yeah, I agree. But I'd like those resources to be homegrown, sustainable and non-threatening to the environment.

By the time the 100 barrels of oil get drilled and "delivered" to the pumps, we could actually be on the path to real alternative fuel solutions for the entire nation.....

Conspiracy...
Now drill off the coast of California. Just before the "big one "that sinks most of the state. ;)

We have the oil this is all a lie just like it was in the 70's. :hatsoff:

What exactly do you agreee with him on? I'm just curious. You're a hard one to figure out...

I'm not American and I don't know much about American politicians but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is curious to know why Hot Mega seems to agree so much with Obama? :dunno:

For the record I think Hot Mega's cool but I gave up trying to figure him a long time ago. :1orglaugh :)

In the mid 90's President Clinton did not agree with oil exploration or drilling when he had the chance to do so for the same reason "by the time we start getting that oil out....bla bla bla". By the mid 2000's we would already be putting some of that oil as gasoline in our cars and after a decade of that decision, we're still not there when it comes to alternative energy, why not? Because the market still does not support it, the government has to subsidize it.

Now, there is this theory that oil is running out, "peak oil" or something. If that is true, well, necessity is the mother of invention so then alternative energy would be supported by the markets and there would be no need for the government to subsidize it but us consumers would be demanding it, and by demanding it I mean asking for it or buying it instead of the rioting and demonstrating kind of demanding. So for now, let's finish up that oil and then when we do run out of oil the market will support alternative energy.

But anyway, my liberal friends, don't worry about your God's decision or anyting that I just said. What he did is just a smoke screen for him to later on hit us with his Cap & Tax anyway.

Hard to figure because while I do bash GOPers mainly...I don't play politics. I state my disagreement with policy accordingly irrespective of who trumpets it.

I don't simply "agree so much with Obama"....much of what I post doesn't amount to agreement with Obama as much as it amounts to refuting nonsense and clarifying the actual facts. In fact, ed....in this very thread I state that I don't particularly agree with this policy. Pay closer attention I guess.

What do/did I agree with Obama on? Reinvesting in the country's infrastructure, ending the Iraq experiment, redoubling our efforts in Afghanistan, closing GiTMO, reforming health care, nuclear nonproliferation, among other reasons...Why I voted for him? Because he was the smartest, most pragmatic candidate and was a stark contrast to play as you go McCain and his silly "running" mate...(what was her name again?)
