Obama, Medvedev sign treaty to cut nuclear arms

Casting aside years of rancor, President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday signed the biggest nuclear arms pact in a generation, lacing the moment with new warnings of sanctions for an intransigent Iran.

The treaty, sealed after months of halting negotiation, is significant not just for what it does but for what it symbolizes: a fresh start for the United States and Russia, and evidence to a watching world that nuclear disarmament is more than a goal.

Bad idea, but then again this is Obama.

Russia was hibernating and they never have and never will reduce their nuclear armament.

This is wonderful! I know the man didn't really deserve the Peace Prize, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.

Anyone who doesn't think so is against God.

We need them. The rest of you can foolishly disarm.

We do not need nuclear arms and the world should be cutting back. One of the reasons it's good for the U.S. is because how can they tell the rest of the world to cut back on nuclear arms and they don't. That's called hypocrisy and for the U.S. to cut back is called leading by example! I've never heard of a good argument for nuclear weapons. How can the world eventually achieve world peace if everyone is ready to blow each other up at a moments notice?

Good job Obama. :hatsoff:

Why does America need so many of these weapons of mass murder?

OMG Willie, you mean the Russians are cheating and can blow up the everything on earth 10 times and we can only do it 9 times. They can make the rubble bounce higher than US. I guess we are fucked.

This is a step in the right direction.

Who really needs enough fire power to wipe out every living thing on this planet a thousand (or however many times it actually is) times over when you can do it just once, right? I doubt we'll ever get rid of them all, but over time as the numbers decrease as I'm sure they will, it will be far less likely that they will fall into the hands of people who will actually attempt to use them.

I think ICBMs, B52s and nuclear submarines are still needed for the US own defense. Completely dismembering the main strategic and nuclear defense force is a sign of being blind and ignoring the power of rogue countries and terrorists.

The worlds got to end sometime. Why not under Mrs Palin? If it happens under someone competent then we'll look far worse as a species to the aliens than if Palin was in charge.

Although electing her in the first place will probably take us down a few notches in their opinion. But still......

I don't think the present treaty touches nuclear subs or the B52 strategy (which is sadly out of date, IMHO). It just reduces the ridiculous (IMO) stock pile of nuclear weapons that we possess.

Exactly. Did the world learn nothing from Superman IV?
