NYC Cop Stripped Of Badge After Cyclist Slam

NEW YORK (AP) ― Police stripped a New York City officer of his badge and gun Monday after a video posted on YouTube showed him body-checking a bicyclist who was part of a Times Square demonstration.

The video was recorded Friday at the Critical Mass ride, a monthly protest of urban reliance on motor vehicles.

The video, posted anonymously, shows the officer standing in the street as bikes whiz past. He moves toward a cyclist and violently knocks him to the ground in front of crowds of people.

The officer in the video was placed on desk duty pending the outcome of a police department investigation, chief police spokesman Paul Browne said. The officer's name wasn't released.

The biker, Christopher Long, of Hoboken, N.J., was arrested because he was obstructing traffic in the heart of Times Square, a criminal complaint said. He was charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The complaint said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground.

During his arrest, Long squirmed and kicked, saying to the officers, "You are pawns in the game. I'm gonna have your job," the complaint said.

There were no other arrests during the ride.

Long's lawyer, David Rankin, said he hopes the Manhattan district attorney's office will drop the charges. The district attorney's office said it was investigating.

Long's next court date was set for Sept. 5.

Cyclist = in the clear.

What brought that cop off? Didnt feel like street duty in the middle of some bike-fest?

The only disturbing part is that he's charged with all that nonsense. There's gotta be a lotta pissed off people in N.Y. jails if they bring people in anything like that. :)

The story is this is a group of cyclists that routinely protest the unsafe conditions for bicycles in NYC and the cops are getting I guess annoyed with them.He was a young cop who apparently lost his cool.

I think that a good body check is due to most, if not all members of Critical Mess ! :yesyes::D There are better ways to protest instead of clogging up arteries of traffic, causing the working people (those fucking conservative people who choose not to live in a subsidized 12' x 14' studio) to burn more fuel, thus, contributing to much higher levels of green house gases
Isn't that counter intuitive hypocrisy ?

Critical Mess also slows commerce, which is known to retard the very economy  that they often find convenient to bash (when it suits their needs)

but hey, if georges soreohhs can find a gathering of 2 wheeled anarchists who really want to get out of their cubicles for a few hours (the last friday of every month IIRC (?), only to breathe the greatly enhanced levels fumes from the traffik jams they've caused . . :dunno:

Any time a cop abuses his position of authority, he should never be a cop again. This seems like one of those times.

Oh, it's a simple body check you say, no big deal? It's just a start. What do you think this fucking neanderthal will do next? Plant evidence, drop guns, pull over hot chicks and rape them on a desserted highway, shake down crack dealers, and frame YOU for his next crime. That's what.

Hang him in Times Square on Sunday afternoon.:ak47:

I agree, but also let's not forget the cops that have killed people from using tasers. Those are the ones that need stripped of everything from the police, badge, gun and qualification to ever work as a cop again. I don't think the cop in question this time needs to be fired, but he does need some punishment besides a desk job.

Aye. Routinely. The cops should just bring them in if it's an illegal demonstration. :p

Legal demonstration, well.. dunno what to tell ya 'bout that one.

I think there have been fights in court over them but that so far the protests have basically been found to be legal. But the cops legal or not are annoyed which is not that uncommon. But he can't lash out like that just cause he's annoyed. He should find another profession with his short fuse.

I hear you loud and clear, OTOH, both parties have a responsibility to act in a civil manner. The protesters have to be managed as well as the cops.
We've seen instances where protesters have been allowed to run free and all hell busts loose as far a vandalism, bodily harm of innocent folk etc. :2 cents:

Professional Wrestler?
Mafia Hitman?
Brooklyn Schoolteacher? :)

A shame that we never hear what happens in stories like these. Months down the line *SOMETHING* will happen, but it'll only get published in a New York paper on page.. thirty or somethin'.

I can't stand cyclists. They never seem to follow the rules of the road. They're supposed to be bound by many of the same rules as cars, but they flaunt them routinely and at least here in the suburbs, that is what makes things dangerous.

That being said, there is no excuse for what this cop did, and he should be fired. You can't go around assaulting people just because they piss you off.

I'll try and an not pre-judge what is going on in the video, the audio wasn't clear enough to hear if the officer spoke to the cyclist prior to his use of force.

The officer may been attempting an arrest (if it was an illegal demonstration) and could have ordered him to stop and the cyclist attempted to move away from the officer, leaving the officer little choice but to knock him off his bike
(or I guess he could have tried to chase after him, but then we all would be laughing at him as his ass was left in the dust :D ).

If the officer simply reacted out of frustration and/or cyclist was legal in what he was doing then the cop should be dealt with like every one else and face charges.

:2 cents:

Body check is way out of order... would have been much more civil just to jam his nightstick between the spokes :p

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Looked to me like, a few bikes passed close enough for him to hit. He appeared to make his way to the guy he hit. Maybe he mouthed off to the cop, pushed his buttons, maybe the cop was having a bad day, and had enough.

Illegal demonstration?

the 1st amendment to the constitution said:
the right of the people peaceably to assemble

bye bye civil rights :wave2:
