Nissan electric car to cost $25K after tax credit

I must say...being able to preheat or precool this coffin with your smartphone makes it sound pretty tempting....appx. 100 mi. on a full charge under "normal" driving conditions.

The 4-8 hr standard charge and nearly 30 min fast charge are still a downer for practical purposes.

Anyway..what do you think?

NEW YORK – Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday its new electric car will cost just over $25,000 in the U.S., a move that could force rivals to lower prices on similar vehicles.

The Leaf, a four-door hatchback due in showrooms late this year, will have a base price of $32,780, but buyers can get a $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, Nissan said.

The price tag puts the Leaf, which can go up to 100 miles on a single charge from a home outlet, within reach of mainstream car buyers, and it also will force competitors to respond when they introduce their cars.

General Motors Co., which also will begin selling its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car later this year, said that it will look at Nissan's pricing before announcing the Volt's price closer to its December sales date.

"I think it's fair to say their pricing, it won't overwhelm, but it will have some influence on our pricing decision," said GM spokesman Rob Peterson.

All right, but has anybody done any study about how much will your electric bill come to when recharching the car? If the increase in the electric bill is less than what I spend on gasoline, they could get a sale here. And how long the batteries last? How much are the replacement batteries? Then the disposal of old batteries, I mean, you can't just throw them in a dumpster since rechargeable batteries contain dangerous chemicals. I'll wait for the next one just to make sure they're reliable. I don't want to be stranded in the middle of some deserted highway at night because the batteries went kaput.

^^That's a far cry from the CJ 428 !

It's a neat alternative for those who, well, like alternative stuff, but these electric only vehicles are not practical *unless we buffer our electrical production grid with clean nuclear energy and fast, before the rest of the developing industrial world leaves us in the dust !

When will people stop being so paranoid about nuclear power if . . . I'll leave it right there as I don't want to drift the thread, at least this early in the going. :o

I am more and more starting to agree with that. Maybe it's time to face facts.

When will people stop being so paranoid about nuclear power if. . . you crash your nuclear car, the fallout radiation will kill everyone within a twenty mile radius.

Fixed! Was that paranoid enough? I even threw in some stupid for od measure...

Theoretically one would be smart enough to recharge on off-peak hours. It is a practical car for short commutes of less than 10 mi. r/t but I don't see this as a standard use vehicle in most situations.

But with respect to the grid issue....these would effectively be grid neutral if the cars are recharged through the night when the grid has extremely low usage.

The most economical vehicle I own uses about 4 gallons of gas to travel 100 miles, so about $12 at today's prices. Even if charged on-peak, I doubt it would cost $12 to recharge this vehicle once.

Strictly as a commuter vehicle, I can see quite a few people giving these things a second look... especially as the prices come down.

Conspiracy...
$25,000 for a small car that is basically a coffin is not a good idea.

People don't like to be forced to accept things they do not want.

Small cars is one of them. People hate them.

Who is being forced to buy this, or any other car? I love cars, specifically sport(y) cars. But I don't need to drive an XK8 to pick up my groceries or pay the water bill. :)

They are making more of these pieces of garbage.
I will not buy one.

People really don't want them and even with these vehicles when the gas prices went up people just stopped driving as much.

People know what they want and these vehicles are not it.

Calm down and have another cupcake, Will. No one is trying to force you (or anybody else) to buy one if you don't want to.

On second thought, put that cupcake down! You've clearly had too much sugar already today. What have I told you about that? :nono:

I read a long time ago that the avarage electric car would cost less then 2 cents to drive a mile
compared to a average gasoline car that costs 13 cents per mile

over 5 to 10 years that seems like it would be a lot of money saved
