NHL star, 27, found dead in his home after he took leave to deal with 'personal matter'

Winnipeg Jets centre Rick Rypien has been found dead in his home, nine months after he took a leave of absence to deal with an undisclosed personal matter.

Police said that the death in Alberta yesterday was sudden, but not suspicious.

The NHL star, who was a cousin of Super Bowl MVP quarterback Mark Rypien, was 27.

'We would like to express our sincere sympathies to the Rypien family as well as Rick's friends,' a spokesman for the Jets said.

'We also appreciate all of the support that has come pouring in from Rick's fans. Rick was a talented player with an extremely bright future.

'His hunger for the game made him a valued team member both on and off the ice. This loss has impacted us as more than just a hockey team.'

Rypien is the second active NHL player found dead this offseason.

Former New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard died in May due to an accidental mix of alcohol and the painkiller oxycodone.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Rypien signed a $700,000, one-year deal with Winnipeg last month after spending parts of six seasons with Vancouver.

He had nine goals, seven assists and 226 penalty minutes in 119 career NHL games, often dropping the gloves against much larger opponents.

'Rick has been a beloved member of the Canucks family for the past six years,' the team said in a statement.

'Rick was a great teammate and friend to our players, coaches and staff. We send our deepest condolences to the Rypien family at this most difficult time.'

The Canucks announced on November 25 that they had granted Rypien an indefinite leave of absence.

It was the second time in three years the forward had left the team to deal with an undisclosed personal matter.

Rypien also received a six-game suspension from the NHL last season after grabbing a fan on his way to the dressing room in Minnesota.

Rypien also took an extended personal leave after a rash of injuries two years ago, missing 70 games during the 2008-09 season.

As a Chicago Blackhawks fan, I'm glad there's one less asshole to bully the team and take cheap shots at players. But as a hockey fan, I hate the fact that he died before he ever hoisted the cup. I never want a players career to end prematurely. It's a damn shame.

I'd die too if I had to play for Winnipeg.

There was another guy in the AHL that had depression issues and killed himself. Can't think of his name but it was not long ago at all.

Depression is a sad and serious thing.

I believe the guy you are thinking of is Tom Cavanagh. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized multiple times in the months before, sadly, he killed himself back in January at the age of 28.

That's the second young NHL player that died this season, and Rick was a great aquirement for the Jets, bummer just a bummer.

:nono:

Now, you know the game belongs in Canada, not bloody fuckin' Atlanta. :elaugh:

Hey I'm just saying; if I was the agent of a depressed hockey player the last think I would want to do is call him up and say "Hey bro! Got you an offer from Winnipeg!"

You're not gonna get any argument about the deplorable "mecca" that is Winnipeg, although there is no denying that decrepit place needs something for those poor folks up there to get excited about. Also there will finally be a border team to my Wild. Fuckin' cheeseheads can't pull a team together.

That's another pitiful excuse for a "city" - Milwaukee. Nothing there was worth going back to. It's no wonder the smallest city in the NFL is Green Bay. Stupid ass Milwaukeeans (no offense Millwaukeeans). :elaugh:

I digress.

Keeping those players isn't my responsibility. I would have played them a lot more if I were coach. Unlike what some people say, there IS a place for fighters in today's game. There will always be a place for them. As long as there are scorers, there will be goons aiming to take them out. And I applaud those fighters for stepping up. But that issue aside, it is a shame he died.
