Actually they said that abour 6 or so years ago about the Senators. And they HAVE been a contender. 11 straight playoff seasons making it to the conference finals twice and the finals once.
If it weren't for the salary cap we would have an amazing team. We've developed players like Havlat, Hossa, and Chara. Jesus, I remember when Chara was fucking terrible. Everytime he touched the puck on a home game I always heard this guy in the crowd yelling "YOU SUCK CHARA". Now he's up for the Norris trophy again. Alfredsson, Spezza, Fisher, and Phillips were all drafted by the Sens as well.
I don't know why we went through that horrible year and a half slump. Last year we had the record for the best start to a season in history, then ended up BARELY making the playoffs. This season started off shit and only got a little better at the end (which sucked because I wanted in the Tavares/Hedman lottery)
Next year we have a fresh start with a new goalie that could be great...or not(injury prone Pascal Leclaire)

he was way too fiery for the team. not only did he chase at least one goalie away, but Vinny Lecavalier actually asked to be traded back in 200-2001 because he didn't get along with John. Vinny almost went to Ottawa for Radek Bonk but luckily the GM stepped in and stopped it from happening
Ohh Wee that would have been sweet to land Vinny...although we would probably have to get rid of someone else to fit him in the cap.
