Native Tribes buy back thousands of acres of land

Native American tribes tired of waiting for the U.S. government to honor centuries-old treaties are buying back land where their ancestors lived and putting it in federal trust.

Native Americans say the purchases will help protect their culture and way of life by preserving burial grounds and areas where sacred rituals are held. They also provide land for farming, timber and other efforts to make the tribes self-sustaining.

Tribes put more than 840,000 acres - or roughly the equivalent of the state of Rhode Island - into trust from 1998 to 2007, according to information The Associated Press obtained from the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs under the Freedom of Information Act.

Those buying back land include the Winnebago, who have put more than 700 acres in eastern Nebraska in federal trust in the past five years, and the Pawnee, who have 1,600 acres of trust land in Oklahoma. Land held in federal trust is exempt from local and state laws and taxes, but subject to most federal laws.

"Native Tribes tired of waiting for the U.S. government to honor centuries-old treaties".

Nice. :cussing:

Help for minorities except for the Natives of this country.

That's good that American Indian Tribes are reclaiming their stolen lands. I hope the First Nations get all their ancestoral lands back which is rightfully theirs

Native Americans should be free to come and go and they choose. They technically did own this land at one time and I have no problem sharing it. They shouldn't have to buy back what's theirs though that's kind of sick and twisted. It's not about being native american when it comes to this it's about what's yours. If someone stole my shit I'd be pissed too.

How was anything stolen? It was lost through bloody conflict against a superior army. Isn't that how this works? One group of people occupies some land and then another group takes said land by force.

They were lied to, The trade they were given for land was well below a fair price, and biological warfare. (Small pox infested blankets, and so on.)

After all of that treaty after treaty was broken.

Everyone is so hostile over land. why do you even need that land anyways? It's not like it's going to hurt you. Do you need that fucking land for your porn stash or something? It's really not that big of a deal. There's plenty of land in this country currently. just saying...

According to most native American beliefs, no one owns the land; they had "territories" and took from other tribes, and had other tribes take their lands.
A lot of times they were basically defrauding the buyers of land by selling land they really had no ownership of, laughing while signing papers they had no part of honoring. And the "joke" was on them when they or others tried to use land ceded to the new USA; fences and settlements had clear property rights ceded to them by the active government, and it was too late to explain that no one really owned the land.
Expecting a stronger more powerful and populous tribe to honor the tribal rights of a weaker tribe was foolish, and Native Americans for hundreds of years had moved on when a bigger tribe moved into their hunting and wintering grounds.
If they wanna get with the program, give up special rights and join the general population. No more tax free status, no more autonomy on tribal lands...Casinos regulated and taxed by the US gov and states.
Buy all the land ya want...good for business.

Every country in the Western Hemisphere was stolen from Indians, why does it seem like the United States is the only country to get shit about it still?

Don't forget about the horrible things that happened to Indians in Central and South America.

Ya can't steal what someone doesn't own. Everybody grabs land according to their needs and ability to keep it...no Native American tribe lived forever on the same land, and at least the US gov't has made some concessions towards ownership...look at Africa, Mexico, and South America.
They had little desire to respect the culture of the whites (stealing livestock, raiding, taking captives to raise, etc) so there was no real reason for a lot of settlers, after a while, to want to ignore or accommodate the tribes, in a lot of situations.
It's hard to see where a nomadic culture has any claim to a particular part of the country if you want to set up a ranch or farm; 300 people laying claim to 100s of thousands of acres wasn't acceptable to European settlers who set up farms.
C'est la vie...

You really should look up the Cherokee Nation. It was a recognized nation by many countries, including the USA. They had intermixed with whites and blacks and got along peacefully with everyone, until settlers wanted their lands and it was stolen, even though the US government recognized their claims.

Yeah...there are plenty of exceptions to a general description...not to mention all the millions in oil Dollars the Nation got to bank when the arid land they were given turned out to have shitloads of oil.
Through history there have been wrong things done, but a hundred and change years later not much can be done by current people to change decisions made by the then resident folks.
Should all Crow peoples be brought up on charges for killings made by some Crow warriors on a raid? What about the deaths of this Native American or that European at the hands of one Crow or another? Are ya gonna take the Crow nation to court for those actions?
Let's not even go there with the Apaches, Sioux, or any Native American tribe.
It's too long ago to try to right ancient wrongs, let today's problems be solved by today's standards, not try to right yesteryear's wrong standards today.
D-Rock thinks that any facts disproving his assertions of right and wrong are rationalizing...so be it. He can rationalize all day long how wrong Western Civilization is...never has made a bit of difference in reality.
This is a subject that has been done to death, both out there in realityland and in other threads...nothing has changed except Hellraisin has a need to post and bring up old news as a bright idea he just had.
Only new news is the tribes are finally buying some land they once claimed...wow.

tartanterrier

Is somewhere outhere.
If the tribes are getting their lands through the casinoes money, then
I'm all for it.Since the most of the money comes from the white man.

As whenever I was at a casino in the states, the place were mostly
filled with white folks.

So isn't the white man really buying back the land for the Natives ;)

Good move if you ask me :1orglaugh
