Monkey selfies: Who owns the rights?

A nature photographer went into the wilderness to take pictures of endangered monkeys. While setting up his equipment the monkeys started getting into his stuff. They took one of his cameras and while playing with it started snapping pictures, some of them selfies. These are some very prized photos but Wikimedia is claiming that they are public domain since the monkey took the pictures and the photographer holds no right to copyright the images.
