Earth Overshoot Day: Mankind has already consumed more natural resources than the planet can renew throughout 2017

Grim milestone falls earlier in calendar than ever before

Humans have already used up their allowance for water, soil, clean air and other resources on Earth for the whole of 2017.

Earth Overshoot Day is on 2 August this year, according to environmental groups WWF and the Global Footprint Network.
The date, earlier this year than in 2016, means humanity will survive on “credit” until 31 December.

“By August 2 2017, we will have used more from Nature than our planet can renew in the whole year,” the groups said in a statement.
“This means that in seven months, we emitted more carbon than the oceans and forests can absorb in a year, we caught more fish, felled more trees, harvested more, and consumed more water than the Earth was able to produce in the same period.”
According to campaigners, the equivalent of 1.7 planets would be needed to produce enough natural resources to match our consumption rates and a growing population.

The Earth Overshoot Day measure has been calculated since 1986 and the day has never fallen so early as in 2017. It looks at the balance between global footprint - what humans take from the earth - and biocapacity, which allows us to produce resources and absorb our waste.
In the 1980s, the overshoot day fell in November, shifting back to October by 1993 and to September just after the millennium.
By 2016 it had reached August 8th.

And if only there was some worldwide governmental body that could determine and enforce my allowance of water or sheets of toilet paper, how many miles I can drive per day, my electricity usage, etc.

Yes the goal of having leaving in a way that EOD would be on Dec 31 or even later but we could take steps towards this goal. For example, if everyone would live like US citizens, EOD would be on March 14, if eveyone would live Luxemburg citizens, EOD would be on Frebruary 17th But if the all world would live like UK citizens, EOD would be on march 4th so, if Luxemburg and US citizens could adapt their way of life to live like UK citizens, that would be a good start. As far as I know, UK citizens don't live in caves, they don't lit their homes with candles, they have electrictity and Internet...

Solving the environment crisis is not something we can achieve overnight, it's a long-term issue that we can solve step by step if we all decide to take these little steps. And even if you're the only one in the neighborhood taking that step, it woun't hurt you...

Ahh yes, "science." Which is why anyone who expresses any skepticism of environmentalists' alarmist claims they are shouted down as heretics. You know, instead of welcoming skepticism like SCIENCE should. But hey, everyone needs a religion.

And what are people in the UK paying for their electricity? It's nearly twice what we're paying in the U.S. And Germans are paying nearly three times what we are.

Aren't your dates off? If the UK is an example we should follow, shouldn't their EOD be later in the year than ours?
