Medical Marijuana Prescribed to Kids with ADHD

(Nov. 23) -- In California, the state with the nation's most permissive medical marijuana law, some children with attention deficit hyperacitivty disorder, or ADHD, are being treated with marijuana -- a fact that has sparked a heated debate over the move.

Reliable figures on the use of marijuana to treat ADHD are hard to come by. Though California says it has issued over 36,000 medical marijuana cards since 2004, the state does not compile statistics on prescriptions for specific conditions, like ADHD. And many doctors and patients are reluctant to talk about it. Still, experts say such prescriptions are becoming more common as the number of pot dispensaries and doctors prescribing marijuana continues to grow.

And not everyone is happy about it.

...

"My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6," a Grass Valley, Calif. woman who wished to remain anonymous told Sphere. "He was hyperactive, and had trouble in school, but we didn't want to put him on Ritalin. Too many side effects. When he got to high school, I suddenly noticed that he'd calmed and could concentrate. I couldn't figure it out. Then he told me that he'd started smoking pot."

Lucky gits , getting it for nothing

I still have to pay for mine , I am not happy

Oh jeez. So stupid! Now I wonder how many parents will be using their kids saying they have ADD to get marijuana.

I hope this isn't real.

Grow your own. As long as you don't go crazy and only have a couple on your land, chances of the DNR seeing you when they do surveilance is pretty low. ;)

I have before but I have to do it with lights & stuff , where I live its always raining , I was 24 before I knew what the sun looked like

Did you sparkle and dazzle when you first basked in the sunlight???

In Cali, you can get a prescription for any "condition". There's a whole industry of doctors who will give a prescription for a small fee. Go in, say you have headaches, aching feet, panic attacks, little appetite, etc., and you can get a medical marijuana card.

But you have to be 18 or older, so this story smells a bit fishy.

Just as I suspected.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Marijuana being smoked is just the vehicle by which the drug THC is most commonly delivered.

If kids are prescribed THC in strip or some other form, how is that different from the prescription of any other drug??

do want me to debate you on weed? i think i speak for everyone but you in saying it should be legal, and certainly used for medical purposes. i have depression and every-time i smoke i feel literally "high"

Is Marinol (THC pill) prescribed to children? I never heard of that.

The real concern is that doctors are "treating" ADD with sedation and downers. Justifying marijuana (for children) because doctors already prescribe Ritalin at alarming levels isn't the smart thing to do. The conversation shouldn't be about kids and pot, but drugs as medicine in general. Every other commercial on TV is for a non-recreational drug yet we're unhealthier than we were 50 years ago.

You wanna quit smoking? Take Chantix. Sure, You Might kill yourself, but at least you won't be smoking after you do!

Can't sleep? Have acne? There's a cure for that too! It might also destroy your brain chemistry and bring about homicidal or suicidal thoughts, but it'll clear up your zits and let you fall asleep after The Daily Show before you blow your brains out.

Kids smoking pot doesn't bother me. It's what kids do. I started when I was 12....quit when I was 17. I realized it was a boring drug (for me) but thank God my parents never tried to diagnose any of my misbehavior in order to have a doctor drug me up 'til I was a zombie.

California is considering banning large screen televisions. They're broke, basically legalized pot, yet haven't made a dime off of it. It's a very weird place.

I had a friend who lived in San Diego, then moved to Boston (which s just as nutty). The shit he told me blew my mind.

Look I'm all for legalising weed, but smoking it is NOT going to help your depression, no matter how high it makes you feel at the time.

Over-prescription/medication is one issue. Whether ADHD is a treatable disorder is another. I suppose it comes down to whether you believe some disorders are made better or alleviated with medicine.

I know someone with land and the DNR do fly-overs. He insists they are running surveilance, but I don't know.

Colorado as well (I believe).

I've heard contrary; I've heard it actually can help depression. I'm sure there are a plethora of links on Google to back it up, as well as some that try to debunk it.

EDIT: this should get you started: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=Medical+Marijuana+for+Depression+&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g3g-m1

Drugs certainly have their place, but there's too many cases where somebody diagnosed with ADD or ADHD is prescribed a drug without being told of any other treatment options or lifestyle changes and learning style alternatives. America has become very lazy and impatient when it comes to disease, illness and disorder. That's why we think "diabetes" when we hear the word "insulin" in any context.

I think there's a majority culture that believes that heath and medicine are synonymous.

You're probably right about that. Also, earlier in the month, I believe parts of Colorado decriminalized the possession of under an ounce. It wasn't a state, but local thing in some parts.

It's ridiculous either way. The fact that anybody (myself included) accepts that people can lose their freedom for smoking a joint or growing a few plants, should be something we're all ashamed of.

I don't disagree with you I just think in the context of this subject you're conflating two, separate issues.

Are there Americans sitting around with pills to go to sleep and pills to wake up and pills to eat and pills to stop eating? Sure.

Can Americans eat better and exercise more? Sure.

Those are separate issues from whether there are effective, known treatments for certain conditions.

If you believe ADHD is a legitimate condition then what's wrong with treating it as long as the treatment is mostly safe?
