Marvel, Gazillion Sign Deal For Comic-Themed MMOGs.

Marvel Entertainment and Gazillion Entertainment have struck a licensing deal to develop massively multiplayer online games based on Marvel characters.

The first game in development is a casual MMO title for younger audiences based on Marvel's "Super Hero Squad" property.

Videogame publisher Gazillion also will develop "Marvel Universe," an MMO game for PC and consoles. Financial details of the licensing deal were not disclosed.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Tuesday's agreement is an exclusive 10-year deal between Marvel and Gazillion, whose investors include Allen & Co and Oak Investments.

Privately held Gazillion is backed by venture capital firms and runs four production studios.

I remember reading about Marvel thinking about making an MMO but looks like the wheels are turning. I know I'll be preordering this, anyone else?

Well, that will kill City of Heros.

I wonder how they are going to pull it off. Not only would most people have to be a generic type of superhero, but who are you going to fight throughout it. In a fantasy setting there is a bunch of monsters and things you have to go through. Unless the world is going to get littered with thousands and thousands of super-villains I don't know how it will work.

PHAIL.
There's almost no way it would work. Buuuut.. the fanbase has to support it 100%. The game has to be tight. Orderly. Intuitive. It's got YEARS on WoW, so graphics and the rest have no competition. I dont see it happening, but.. we'll wait and see. Huge universe. Huge storylines. IMO.. too much pressure to actually deliver a solid product. But Marvel has the sway in the movie industry.. the talent in the writers.. and oh dear gawd the textures will be PIXEL-PERFECT. Artist heaven.

But that's just the start. You can throw all the talent in the world at a project.. doesnt mean it'll succeed. heh
