Manchester United vs. MLS "All-Stars"

The game started at 5:30 PDT and its already 2-0 ManU in the 19th minute, and if I've read correctly MU scored their first goal witihn 30 seconds. Since the start of me typing this, I'd be willing to bet MU has scored another 2 or 3 goals already. Remember the "Why Isn't Soccer Popular in America," thread? Add the outcome of this game as a reason why. Manchester United, a Premiere League (or whatever its called) team is set to expertly dispatch a group of the "best" players from the MLS. What a joke American soccer is.

No...No I...I don't remember that one...Oh, you mean the one that pretty much stays in constant rotation here, and just won't go away because people are essentially chasing their own tails over there? That one?
...No I don't remember that herpes of a thread.

:1orglaugh I love that thread! Especially when Ice gets pissed cause it goes off on a tangent. BTW I have at least 3 posts in that thread saying this would happen.

That game does not reflect American soccer, only the league itself. The reason the MLS is so shallow in talent is the very best American players leave the States and play elsewhere for bigger money and bigger clubs. The Brazilian league is at best the 10th best league in the world but no one would dare say Brazil has the 10th best players. Just they all leave for foreign soil. And btw Manchester United would probably beat an all star team made up of the best players from the 8th-20th best teams in the Premier League.

I'm pretty sure Manchester fielded their B-team for this, didn't they?

This is not an indictment against American soccer. It's a "reality check" for MLS, even though some of MLS's "best" players didn't play.

The Mancs took a pie in the face from Kansas City earlier on their tour so they put out a squad that was determined to win big...:dunno:

The Mancs are in trouble this season. I smell 3rd place for them in the EPL.

I gots 1. Chelski 2. Arsenal 3. Mancs 4. Manshitty this upcoming season.

Wayne Rooney won't have the same kind of year. Berbatov sucks. I think it all comes crashing down for them this season:thefinger:rofl:

First of all, MLS isnt going to be defined by one game.

Not to make any excuses for the MLS all stars but Man U is one of the best if not the best team in the world and they went up against a team that was put together in little more than a week and that and never played with each other before.

Erm, that's not true, really. Who scored for us? Hernandez, Macheda, Gibson and Cleverley, none of whom are likely to be regulars for us this season.

None of these players will be regulars but it is a damn good group of young talented players. I expect Chicharito to see some time up front this season and Sir Alex made a steal by signing this guy before the World Cup therefore saving millions of dollars.

^ That makes no sense whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see them play lots this season, I love seeing young players emerging and playing well. But I know Ferguson and I'll be surprised if Chicharito or any of those players start more than 10 or 15 games in the league this season.

It was just a friendly. The result doesn't mean anything. I am far more surprised by LA Galaxy's 1-4 defeat at home in the Concacaf Champions League in their match against Puerto Rico. That really means MLS football isn't quite as good as it needs to be to attract a larger audience.

No way, Manshitty will not make it 4th. Liverpool will. Both Gerard an,d Torrest are gonna stay. Torres won't have has much injury problems he had last year, Joe Cole has came...
Or maybe Tottenham will keep its place in the Big Four

How does Los Angeles lose in the CCL while Toronto manages to win?

I don't see Sir Alex starting any of these guys much but some of them especially Chicharito will see some valuable minutes as subs.

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
I have watched Double AA teams beat MLS teams in the Open Cup. Some teams put a premium on the regular season, others want to win the tournaments throughout the season, others go for both.

The reason i bring that up is the separation in talent from the MLS down is not as great as it is Europe. A game here or there can be decided by the bounce of a ball. Over a season, the MLS teams will reign.

American soccer is still growing and trying to find a style. I frankly don't give a shit if Billy Six-pack, in his Ohio state jersey and Dallas Cowboys hat enjoys soccer or not. I don't measure my enjoyment by how many people are with me.

You should try going to a Carolina Hurricanes playoff game. The arena is packed and many of the people there have no clue what the offside rule is.

American sports fans, on average, want to be part of something special. The NFL is "special" because of the gambling, fantasy and limited number of home games. The World Cup got good numbers because it was the World Cup.

Baseball attendance is down, so is tv viewership, because there are so many games. Each game is not "special". Attendance and viewership will go up in the league championship series and the World Series.

There were over 70,000 at this game, because it was special. There are many soccer fans here, but they are looking for a reason to go. Seeing Brian Ching play is not gonna cut it.

What it means is that the US has an average talent pool, but one that is deep, which is why the lower teams beat MLS teams all the time, in the Champions League and in the Open Cup. If there were 30 teams instead of 16, the overall talent on each team wouldn't drop off much. The only difference between the MLS and the NASL/USL is the few big name guys here and there, such as Landon Donovan, Shalrie Joseph, Juan Pablo Angel, etc.
