Man kills 26 at Conn. school, including 20 kids

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — A man opened fire Friday inside two classrooms at the Connecticut elementary school where his mother worked as a teacher, killing 26 people, including 20 children, as youngsters cowered in corners and closets and trembled helplessly to the sound of gunfire reverberating through the building.

The killer, armed with two handguns, committed suicide at the school and another person was found dead at a second scene, bringing the toll to 28, authorities said.

Police shed no light on the motive for the attack.

The rampage, coming less than two weeks before Christmas, was the nation's second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the Virginia Tech massacre that left 33 people dead in 2007.

I really have no words to express the disgust I feel. Up to a point I would understand why someone would shoot somebody he had an altercation with, but kids? Really? Why?

I'm speechless as well. Anything involving kids is awful, and the fact that so many of them amongst other people were hurt/killed is sickening.

Uh, I don't see why it would be in Politics. It's a news event, not political bickering. Besides, I never go into the Politics section.

Because the first thing that is brought up is political action with bills taking away more freedom.

I'm afraid to even go into that thread.

I find this repugnant. I agree with gunslingingbird...I get shooting someone, but to do this to children, then deny the families the right to see justice, by taking the cowards way out, sickens me.

Let me just preface this by saying that not all of us in the United States are sick, cowardly motherfuckers that go around shooting innocent people.

That being said, we have our work cut out for us here in the USA for generations to come. Our entire culture needs to be re-evaluated. These people that have committed these shootings this year make me really ashamed to be a member of this society. And why do they all (except that Holmes asshat) off themselves after shooting innocent people??? Fucking cowards.

You answered your own question there. These sick fucks are cowards who don't want to face the consequences of their actions so they would rather die than face jail time.

I have no pity, sympathy, or empathy for anyone that do things like this.

Agree with everything you said. After everything that happened ingrates such as this have no intention of getting themselves caught. If that was to happen it would take away the power they have in dictating and carrying out their heinous acts. Only they will allow themselves to have their control taken away so once they know the end is near for them they take themselves out. Among all the carnage, havoc and pain they have caused they perform one more gutless act.

My condolences to all the families and everyone affected by this tragedy.

We can't even keep drugs out of a prison, so that's how effective law enforcement is here. A prison...

This is really sad. Today's shootings should start some sort of study or inquiry to get a sense of if people are bottling up emotions. In the navy, we were given training to look for signs in the men on the sub, if sub life was going to crack them. My XO used to let men be men sometimes to blow off the steam.

What a disgusting criminal act. I have no sympathy for the alleged perpetrator. My prayers goes out to the unfortunate families that are forever marred by this tragedy.

RIP to all of the victims.

Not only that, we should be looking at all of these fucking drugs they give out. Every five minutes there's a commercial on TV about a class action suit due to side effects from some drug. I wouldn't be surprised if some of this shit is causing people to snap.

I've been saying this for years. All this time I've found it fascinating that not one politician has come out against the proliferation of pharmaceutical commercials and ads in our culture.

No kidding. It's terrifying how they push drugs out onto the market without doing long-term studies. We have no idea what these chemicals can cause. Just look at bath salts - who knew a recreational drug would turn a person into a cannibal?

But.. I also think if there were more access to quality mental health care, things like this may be less frequent. I don't want to get too political, but it's scary that people have easier access to guns than mental health care here in the US. But getting help is a huge part of the battle, and unless you have friends, family, coworkers, or others in your life that encourage/force you to get help, a mentally ill person is not likely to take advantage of such services anyway.

Not only this. But what happens sometmes is the person is ok so long as they are on medication and released om mental health facilities. But without supervision, the person stops taking the medication and the problem returns. This is what happened in my area starting in the late 70's when they closed one of the larger public mental health facilities. Unfortunately, quite a few became homeless.
