Missouri store clerk wins $258M Powerball jackpot

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.—A central Missouri convenience store clerk with $28.96 in his bank account and a stack of utility bills to pay came forward Thursday as the winner of a $258 million Powerball jackpot.

Chris Shaw, 29, said he plans to use the winnings to pay off the $1,000 he owes a friend for a truck he recently bought, catch up on his utility bills, see a dentist about getting his two missing front teeth replaced, and take his three children and his girlfriend's two children to Walt Disney World in Florida.

"We didn't come from money. For us it's just going to be a huge relief to know I'm going to be able to pay my electric bill, my gas bill," Shaw told the Associated Press. "It's like a weight lifted. I had bills at home I didn't know how they were going to be paid."

Shaw said he bought the $5 ticket Wednesday at the Break Time convenience store where he works in Marshall, about 80 miles east of Kansas City. The tattooed father of three accepted his ceremonial check at the Missouri Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City wearing a tan and red plaid shirt, a red hat and a huge grin.

"That amount of money to me is like a fairy tale," Shaw said. "I'm just a regular guy working paycheck to paycheck ... well not any more."

I hate feel good stories like this. My only solace comes with the knowledge that he'll be bankrupt in ten years. Enjoy the money while you have it...

The fact he says that he's just glad that he'll have his electric/gas bill covered shows he doesn't yet understand the gravity of his win. Hopefully he gets a financial adviser and if he doesn't care too much for money as he implies he can give a large portion away to good causes.

If he finds a way to bankrupt 258 million dollars we sould pay his avisit so he could meet a toliet seat.:dunno:I'm just saying.Other than that I'm happy for him.He should do the samrt thing and sit on it a nice nest egg.:dunno:Right

I've heard that most lottery winners end up bankrupt because they think that the sum of money they won is so large it will never run out. Granted $258 million dollars is a lot of money, I hope this guy doesn't go out and try to build a NASCAR speedway behind his trailer park, lest he should find himself trying to get a government bailout.

Just sayin'

Yeah this guy should get a financial advisor, and put some money in CD's and I am sure tons of investment firms will be calling him non stop offering to buy his winnings.

Gotta think if you have a windfall of money like that. Don't go plastering your mug and name all over the tube and papers.

His biggest problem is most likely going to come from people who want to target him or his family for outright strong arm robbery.

what the fuck you lookin at?
At least it wasn't a fuckin doctor or successful business owner that won. I get sick when those kinds of people win.

If somebody doesn't have that much money left playing the lottery isn't a smart thing to do, not that playing the lottery is ever a smart thing to do. He got lucky, but the money he used to buy his lottery tickets could have been critical.

I enjoy stories like this. As others have said, often times the winners are people that are already somewhat financially secure so it's nice to see this happen for someone who could really use it.
