Major League Baseball: It's Own Worst Enemy

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
I know there is an MLB thread getting a lot of attention now but I thought this issue to be worthy of it's own entry.

Anyone watching the world series tonight can only shake their heads at the deplorable conditions under which this very important game is being played. It's like 40 degrees and raining and just horrible weather and is getting worse by the minute....certainly not the the type of environmental conditions one would like to see for a competition of this magnitude. They used to refer to "October" as world series time but now, with expansion and changes to the playoffs and what not, we are literally playing the game in semi-winterlike conditions on more than a number of acceptable occasions. This is ridiculous and efforts should be undertaken to correct it. The season is WAY too long to begin with and now, after teams battling and struggling all year long to get to this point, the whole equation is upset by the wild-card addition of horrific weather conditions that unquestionably affect the ability of either team to play up to their individual potentials.

This has got to stop. My suggestion: Get rid of the 162 game schedule that was introduced in 1961 and let's go back to the 154 game schedule that was in effect for decades in MLB that seemed to work quite nicely. Other than blatant greed, what is the justification for such a long season? Basketball and hockey seem perfectly capable of determining who is the cream of the crop in their seasons after 80 games or so....what conditions dictate that MLB has to play TWICE as many games to determine the same conclusion? Everyone except the greedy owners gets ripped off by such an arrangement and it's time that a commissioner with some balls (yeah....fat fucking chance of that) did something about it.

Perhaps the most serious travesty is the totally-blind dedication to getting this game in no matter what that MLB feels they must accomplish because of their financial obligation to the television networks (God forbid that the best interest of the players or fans would be of paramount importance!). If this were a regular-season game, it would likely never have been commenced to begin with! Don't the world series teams deserve the same rational judgment that would normally be employed? Incredible!

I've been a lifelong baseball junkie and I love the game more than any other. However, tonight I feel cheated (taking nothing away from either team....I am a Cardinal fan so I have no prejudicial axe to grind about this) over the unnecessary and quite ridiculous conditions under which both of these fine teams are being ****** to play. We deserve to get the best these teams can deliver and I don't think anyone can argue that the conditions under which this world series is being played, especially tonight's very pivotal game, make for either an entertaining or truly competitive spectacle as it should be.

What a shame....weather and the greedy TV networks and MLB owners win and the rest of us lose.
