Like France, Canada has now banned the burqa in certain public settings.

I'd like to meet you Aria, do You Mind if I show up completely covered, from head to toe?

As we have previously discussed - you pretty much live here already .. yah?

More or less, yeah. Certainly a case could be sufficiently argued my state is in fact the "Canada" of America. I like the fact that, relatively speaking, we're not in Canada, but still we're not of America. We are our own entity. :yesyes:

I understand uncovering their face at the reciting ceremony. Since you have to see that everyone is saying it. But banning it outright??? Hell no!! Canada is supposed to be all about equality and inclusiveness, this is such BULLSHIT. I'm so PISSED!

Equality and inclusiveness - that means we all get held to the same standards - and those include standards of openness. How equal is it if I can't hide my face because my religion (actually, not religion, but cultural re-interpretation) DOESN'T prescribe it. It goes both ways - I have every right to see the face of the person I am dealing with ... otherwise we'd all be going round dressed as beekeepers or wearing masks.

Shifty

O.G.
For the record, this situation is not 'like France'. There is no outright ban proposed.

The veil is to be removed during the swearing in ceremony for citizenship.

I'm fairly certain a "slippery slope" argument is being put forth by a number of people/groups though.

Slippery slope .... if a slippery slope consists of gently trying to edge out a primitive, medieval, misogynist subjugation, and level the playing field of daily social interaction, I'm strapping on skis and hitting that slope ....

If we happened to meet naturally on the street one day? Not at all.
If you hunted me down after seeing me on a pornsite. Well that's just creepy. But even if you WEREN'T covered from head to foot, hunting me down in real life after seeing me on a porn site is creepy and smells of stalker, lol.

That's just plain silly. You're not talking about inclusiveness you're talking about conformity. I'm talking about the acceptance and understanding of other peoples cultures. Who said that you CAN'T cover your face? No one. "otherwise we'd all be going round dressed as beekeepers or wearing masks."
That logic is ridiculous as most people have no desire to cover themselves from head to foot. Your logic is the same as "if we allow homosexual acceptance everyone would instantly turn gay." even though many simply AREN'T interested in changing sexuality.
Equality and inclusiveness does NOT mean making people change to fit your mold. It means accepting and understanding the differences.
If a woman is raised to dress in a certain state of modesty who are we to demand that she bare more skin day to day? Do you then dare presume to demand that I walk around in a bikini every day if that is the culture you're used to? How do you know that by expecting these women to wear less you are not making them feel overexposed and oversexed against their will?
We live in a culture where we see tits falling out on the street pretty much every day but we need to respect that they don't.
Their wearing more clothes doesn't HURT anyone. Do you find modesty offensive?
Or are you simply afraid? Does the fact that you can't see their faces clearly make you feel like you are at a higher risk for illegal activity?
Because illegal activity happens in Canada every day with bare faced people.
I see ^No reason to discriminate against a completely harmless cultural clothing choice.

Oh Phuurlease .... this has nothing to do with modesty. It has to do with prohibition and misogyny. Even a Wikipedia-level understanding of the clothing restrictions placed on Muslim women reveals its true purpose - control and subjugation. The message is that women are responsible for the tempting of men, and that it is women who are to blame for men being tempted, or straying. Happily, the mad mullahs had a perfect solution that both prevented the evil temptresses from wreaking havoc on men and, at the same time, put them firmly in their place. Cover them up. That way, men don't have to control themselves, and women get pushed even further into the shadows where they are permitted to exists as incubators for the much-wanted sons of the fraternal hegemony of Islam.

If you'd bother to try and perceive my post at more than face value (boom-boom) you'd see it's very ludicrousness is a reflection of the ludicrous nature of Islamic cultural and sexual repression.

the burqa is not about modesty, it's about repression. banning it - at whatever level - is a strike against repression and will allow some women, for the first time, to experience the world without a cotton body shackle.

All Western counties should follow France, Belgium and Canada in their decision. After all, who knows who's under that cover? In Belgium a bank was rubbed by 6 'ladies' un burkas. In reality they were 6 men, all with Kalashnikovs and AK-47 under their burka. Gone with it I say, and if they don't like it, they can always go back to their country of origin.

Except that it won't. You underestimate the control of Islam on the lives of these women. Because of this law, there are now thousands of women all over France who feel they are unable to leave their homes. The French government has effectively put them under house arrest. If they go out with a burga on, they risk arrest. If they go out without it on, they risk being beaten by their husbands and/or shunned from their community. This law was created with the high, noble goal of ending the repression of Muslim women in France, but all it succeeded in doing was making that repression 10x more burdensome.
