Honestly, I'm talking about going from a b-list actress to an a-list actress. She has both the looks and the talent to do it, yet consistently is put into strange projects. At this point in her life, she's known more for her looks than she is her acting. And, if you don't believe me, look up what her movies gross. Even the 2 Underworld movies she was in did $55 million and ~$60 million. Far from hits, as far as Hollywood is concerned. Whiteout barely cracked $10 million and Vacancy didn't reach $20 million.
While she's very pretty she's not that outstanding of an actress. Besides, great actresses don't make the top-tier money in Hollywood. The sexiest actresses don't make the top-tier money. The A-listers for female stars are the cutie-pie, highly likable, girl next door types like Reese Witherspoon, younger Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock, etc. They're all pretty enough guys are attracted, not so sexy that girls feel threatened by them, and they protect their brand by sticking to the same formula for every movie. Or they screw up their brand like Meg Ryan and try to be "real actresses" and are never heard from again.
Kate's not Meryl Streep and too sexy to be Sandra Bullock. She'll just have to be happy pulling down a few million per film.

Well put Onan. Kate is far too pretty to be an A-lister. Honestly, she could be the best actress in the world, but nobody would notice because we'd be too busy checking out how hot she is. Plus, people's insecurities would always make them play her down for being "just some hot chick".

I'd suggest you stop watching Underworld and Van Helsing, and go watch Nothing But the Truth, Snow Angels, Last Days of Disco, Cold Comfort Farm, Haunted, The Aviator, and a few others. Kate Beckinsale is a very good actress at worst. Her only fault is she sometimes makes bad choices in film, or she had a bad agent.
There is no such thing as an A-list or B-list. The whole A-list garbage was created by the media so they could label actors. The industry didn't create it, and actors don't refer to one another by such insipid labels. There are only two kinds of actors in Hollywood. Successful and unsuccessful, or talented and untalented, and Kate is definitely a talented, successful actress.
You aren't even close. She made more than that 5 years ago. According to a recent trade as of a year ago, she makes 6-8 million per film, not counting the small independent films that actors do for very little money. Actresses like Julia Roberts make twice that. The reason Kate doesn't make more than that is because she prefers the smaller, often more realistic films instead of the giant blockbusters that have massive budgets. It's why I find the "she needs to develop her career" comments hilarious. You're talking about a very rich, very successful, famous actress that makes more in a few months work than any of us will see in a lifetime.
For what it's worth, she just got through shooting a film with Mark Wahlberg, and will shoot another film with Sigourney Weaver after that.
