Love & Hip Hop’s Juju sat down with Wetpaint to discuss her Afro-Cuban heritage as well as her close bond with fellow L&HH stars Yandy Smith and Kimbella Vanderhee.
When it comes to her Afro-Cuban ethnicity, the Florida native admits it can be tricky explaining her rich heritage to those who believe she only wants to seem “exotic” when embracing her bloodline.
“It’s weird because it’s like you’re stuck in the middle of this weird place. It’s like, you’re too black to be Hispanic and too Hispanic to be black, and you’re always in this crisscross.”
She went on, “If I embrace that I’m Afro-Cuban, people say that I’m saying I’m not black, and that’s not what I’m saying at all…I’ll get a lot of flack, like ‘you just want to be exotic, you just want to be different,’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not different!’
“I speak full Spanish and my parents barely speak English and they’ve been here since 1980. I’m very much Cuban and I’m very proud of that, but that doesn’t take away from my African roots either.”
When it comes to her friendships with Yandy and Kimbella, the reality star says the three of them bonded over their men all being members or affiliates of Harlem rap crew Dipset, led by her longtime boyfriend, Cam’ron.
