Judge stops federal funding of embryonic stem cell research

A U.S. district judge granted a preliminary injunction Monday to stop federal funding of embryonic stem cell research that he said destroys embryos, ruling it went against the will of Congress.

The ruling by Judge Royce C. Lamberth was a blow to the Obama administration, which last year issued guidelines to allow federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Lamberth's ruling said all embryonic stem cell research involves destroying embryos, which ******** the Dickey-Wicker Amendment included in federal spending bills.

"The Dickey-Wicker Amendment unambiguously prohibits the use of federal funds for all research in which a human embryo is destroyed," Lamberth's ruling said. "It is not limited to prohibit federal funding of only the 'piece of research' in which an embryo is destroyed. Thus, if ESC [embryonic stem cell] research is research in which an embryo is destroyed, the guidelines, by funding ESC research, ******* the Dickey-Wicker Amendment."

One wonders what part of "cure terrible diseases" that Congress fails to understand?

:1orglaugh Truthfully I'm kinda torn on the issue. It's important work, and is a stepping stone to one of my favorite interests (nano tech) but morally I'm just not sure.

See, that's the thing. These are cells. I have my own definition about life and when it begins, but at the cellular level? I can't make that leap. And, to bring religion into this: God gave us the tools to figure these things out. IMO, we are ignoring thousands of years of our own evolutionary knowledge. I don't see God being happy about this.

But I guess if it came right down to it I'm for stem cell research. Does that make me left or right. Cause I've always just decided each issue on its own with no agenda that I was aware of.

I think stem cell research is a good thing but I'm torn in someways about it. I need to think more about when I really think life begins as I'm not totally sure anymore.

Do people not get abortions anyways? So what do they do with the fetus when everything is said and done? Be it the individual getting an abortion, the doctor office performing the abortion, or whoever collects the fetuses in the end.

And this isn't my way of saying I am against or for abortion; however, it is not ******* to have one and people continue to have them. Thus it does not matter what I am for or against what the individual can choose. It happens. Therefore why not study on embryonic research of what people are already doing?

Or does this need to be some sort of ***** donation bank type of thing? Donating a fetus. Sign one line and check one box or the other form and box. It can be something like this:

1) I agree to have an abortion and give up a right of the fetus inside of me. I do, however, wish to not partake in embryonic research due to it being morally wrong and I oppose embryonic research.

Sounds like a test idea to me. It would give people a choice of what to do with their aborted fetus they no longer want and having taken out of their body.

I believe this could be a worthwhile idea to this problem. It is only an idea. Brainstorming.

Wouldn't have worked anyways since your clone would probably get the same idea and therefore try to **** you. It's better to just prevent cloning altogether.

how about asking when pain begins? A dish of cells which has no nerve endings vs diabetic who has to undergo thousands of needle sticks every year- you can certainly speculate about whether the former can feel any pain, the latter is not up for debate.
