Jon Lord Dead: Deep Purple Keyboardist Dies At Age 71

LONDON — British rocker Jon Lord, the keyboardist whose powerful, driving tones helped turn Deep Purple and Whitesnake into two of the most popular hard rock acts in a generation, died Monday. He was 71.

A statement on Lord's official website says the Leicester, England-born musician suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism in London after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

"Jon passed from Darkness to Light," the statement said.

Lord co-wrote some of Deep Purple's most famous tunes, including "Smoke on the Water," and later had a successful solo career following his retirement from the band in 2002. The statement posted on Lord's website said he died "surrounded by his loving family."

When Perfect Strangers came out, I couldn't listen to anything else. What Nirvana was to a later generation, Deep Purple was to me.

RIP Jon Lord. He attacked the organ like it was a heavy metal lead guitar. :banger:

Godspeed Jon Lord:hatsoff:

I only found out a few hours ago. It's damn sad. I hate cancer (but who honestly doesn't). Obviously this means the end of Deep Purple. Just like fellow keyboardist Rick Wright's death (also from cancer) put an end to the hope of a Pink Floyd reunion. Both guys were so crucial to their bands' sound that there is no replacing them.
Damn the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for ignoring this band!!! It's unbelievable that they haven't been inducted. I would imagine they will be inducted this year or the next. It's just that Jon Lord will be inducted posthumously.

The same can be said for Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford, Alan White and the all the other remaining members of Yes. :(
