John Stossel: Some Americans 'Too Stupid' To Vote

If there were an aptitude test required for politicians to run for office and for Americans to vote, many would fail it

For sure it would lead to anarchy. Which is why many of the nitwits on both sides of the aisle should stay home on voting days, perhaps?

You're never going to have an entirely educated and politically well versed population that fact just can't be helped, nor can you take away that populations right to vote if they wish to do so (of course I'm sure some of them will still stay away come voting day). The one thing we can do is provide an incentive for our elected leaders, those who actually choose to go into public life the opportunity to work for the public's interest so that those with or without the ability to understand what the role of government is are taken care of. This means making the positions in government far more viable to the people who can truly bring about lasting change, which includes making governmental work far more stable and financially worth while, after all as it has been shown; higher wages will attract far more highly skilled/educated individuals for the position than that of something less so. Well paid, intelligent politicians seem far less likely to be lead astray into their own personal interests than those who now have to live off of a government wage.

A little idealistic perhaps, but you get my overall point.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?
He may have a point. Of course, however, that sentiment is not exclusive to America.

Damn right. I was talking to a taxi driver the other day who said every time the Conservatives have been in power they've left the country better off and every time labour have been in power they've left the country worse off.
I have a good friend who has NO interest in politics. She complains about benefit cheats among the general populace. I find the ones in parliament much worse.
As for americans being too stupid to vote.... *cough*GWB*cough*

Very true, just be thankful our nations aren't direct democracies. What a complete disaster that would be.

It always amuses me when people living in the US complain about not having a direct democracy. Makes me want to scream: It's to protect the nation from people like you asshole!. :D

I have to agree with that, but I don't think it is limited to Americans. I didn't watch the video so he might have explained this, but I don't think people are too stupid to vote; they are just ignorant to a wide array of political issues. Most people know more about reality television contestants than they know about political candidates. They vote the way they have been told to since they were young.
