Actor Sam Waterston was arrested Friday along with “Grace and Frankie” co-star
Jane Fonda at a climate change rally in Washington.
Waterston said it was his first time being arrested, according to reports.
Fonda has been arrested numerous times and says she has moved to Washington temporarily to protest weekly against practices that contribute to climate change.
He and Fonda were among several protesting continued fossil-fuel extraction and advocating for the Green New Deal when they were detained on the Capitol Hill steps.
It was part of Fonda’s new initiative, “Fire Drill Fridays,” designed to draw attention to the environmental destruction being wrought by humankind’s unremitting fossil fuel use.
She told The Washington Post last week that she plans to conduct teach-ins every Thursday evening, then protest on Fridays, for a total of 14 weeks until filming resumes for “Frankie and Grace.”
“We’re going to engage in civil disobedience and we’re going to get arrested every Friday,” she said.
She said she is inspired to take this particular action by teen climate activist Greta Thurnberg.
