Two tidbits about Mr. Arness that struck was he was the thing in the 50's movie The Thing & Peter Graves was his *******. Fare thee well Marshall Dillon.

Yeah, I knew Peter Graves was his *******... Here's something you may not know; the role of Matt Dillon was originally offered to John Wayne, but he turned it down and recommended James Arness. Something else, Gunsmoke was cancelled in 1967. The head of the studio was out of the country at the time, but when he got back, he pitched a fit as he loved the show. His solution, he cancelled Gilligan's Island and Gunsmoke stayed on until 1975. Even though The Simpsons have been on longer (years), Gunsmoke is still ahead of them in # of episodes, almost 150, as that show made more per year than The Simpsons. James Arness was truly an icon of American television. RIP.

I knew about the cancellation & John Wayne from a PBS show on TV series (I believe it was American Experience). One episode was westerns, next was police shows etc. I wasn't able to see the westerns episode in its entirety.

R.I.P. Mr Arness.

It was called "Pioneers of Television" and it was fantastic. They did 2 series of four episodes each.

The first four were:
Late Night
Sitcoms
Variety Shows
Game Shows

And the second four were:
Science Fiction
Westerns
Crime Dramas
Local **** Shows

Great documentaries. You can buy them on Amazon or get them on Netflix.
