Never heard of a "white elephant", but have heard of "elephant in the room" - idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss. It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have chosen to avoid dealing with the looming big issue.
I thought White Elephants were gifts you gave away....?

People give Shimmy a lot of hell (some of it deserved), but I have to give him credit for getting close to something that many of us (secretly) think about when we're in relationships.
And to answer his question: maybe. I :dunno: Sometimes we keep something going out of convenience or just because we're too lazy/unmotivated to try to find a better situation. Or maybe we convince ourselves that what we have is as good as it's going to get. If I keep thinking about this, I'm probably going to get depressed. So I believe I'll go see what my white elephant is up to and if she wants to come up next weekend and do some Christmas shopping.

I don't have a girlfriend and No, I certainly don't plan on it. I really need help doing some things myself because I have a physical problem that affects my joints so I can't afford to have a high-maintenace woman. A white elephant must mean someone who's high maintenance and I don't want a girl like that, I want one I can spend time with and we can do things together.

In all honesty, I still havent read the post, but unless Shimmy is a complete muppet I presume that by a white elephant he´s referring to something that you value so much that keep it locked up for fear of outside taint.
