He made his stand-up debut at The Bitter End, where his comedic idol, Woody Allen, also began. He began using the stage name "Stewart" by dropping his last name and changing the spelling of his middle name "Stuart" to "Stewart." Of course he's Jewish, he talks about being Jewish all the time. And no he's not ashamed of it you ass-licking moron, if he was he wouldn't talk about it all the time. His father, Donald Leibowitz, abandoned his family when Jon was 11, and the two still have no contact. This is why he doesn't use Leibowitz, because he has a shitty relationship with his dad, and doesn't want to use the man's name. As ApolloBalboa said, Stuart is Jon's middle name, so he adopted that as a stage name.

Yeah, Stewart has alluded to the lousy relationship with his father a few times, though not that often. I imagine he doesn't even really like to discuss the man. It's no doubt why, despite both his parents being teachers, when an issue concerning teachers is raised he regularly notes that his mother is a teacher but never even bothers to mention his father.
